Feature: Site should be gamed.

This is probably the best and most leading edge way to draw people to the site. It would be simple too. One gaming mechanism would give people points for completing items. (Not items items, items from a list of items that can be completed to earn points – sometimes a subject, but could be other things too). When the item to be completed is represented by a subject then it would get a “tag” from the list. Like the tag “blog a trip”.

People would cume points by having tagged subjects. Points would get them onto the leader board(s) and enough points would earn them prizes. Anything from plugins to free months subscriptions to even someday real dollars for some things.

The community itself can moderate this so that we don’t have to. There can be a moderation tag that says “you didn’t really do this” that anyone could put on to cancel the points or at least make them open to review by peers. Private subjects and subjects with the “mine” tag would be excluded from the games.

Perhaps we don’t even need user tracking to make this work. People would have to create themselves as a group to participate individually. A group with many members would be a team. Leader boards and points would always go to groups, not individuals named in a group.

thumbs upSlashdot has improved their site since I quit going there regularly ~ 10 years ago. THeir system used to rate users by peer ratings.
Stackoverflow is also nicely gamed with self moderation.
