Why quads? Quads vs RDF

About: main page - simile

The current quads tagroom is http://fastblogit.com/tags/quads
I have access to so many good tools that use RDF input I would like to know why quads are any better.

The Simile set of tools is quite interesting. See the About link for them.
Thanks

BTW, rdf does have namespaces.
This is group of some of them in WWW.
Here is the FOAF vocab name space.
Namespaces are not contexts.  They are vocabularies.  Contexts are actual collections of statements.  Those statements can use vocabularies from several namespaces.

I have not used RDF & I hate XML, that notwithstanding I can imagine that they could be used like context. A vocabulary is in a way the way that context enters into a language.
You can use the FOAF namspace to tell the difference between context and vocablulay.  FOAF gives the words to describe facts about people and who knows who.  A context of people is a particlar group of people strongly interacting.  I would say that if you collect a group of people who are described in FOAF, then you have a context.

Apparently quads ended up being implemented in RDF as "NamedGraphs" .  I got that from a acquaintance i found on facebook.  Thanks Max Völkel.

Well I've discovered another excellent "tool that uses RDF input".  It's Virtuoso ... watch the demo here or follow the designer on twitter here. I doubt that it would be worth the expense of installing that on our vps, but i don't see why my implementation of quads could not be used for anything that that Virtuoso would give us.  It certainly is available to you, should you require it for any of your projects on our vps.

source: my comment  Seth Russell on  SemWeb people... whats the earliest tedious RDF-is-doomed thread you can find?

It's not the syntax that could ever doom it ... people live with syntax if it can be made to word at all. It's the thing itself. It got doomed when it refused to accept that context should have been the other element ... a triple is not just true ... it is true in a context. Sorry, i just had to say that ... apparently i didn't get all my tedious rant out back then.

Quads were invented to introduce the next essential element in a logical sentence:
  • RDF - subject, verb, object
  • Quads - context, subject, verb, object
Also there was an attempt to simplify by removing RDF's requirement of globally unique identifiers.  Hense a simple word identifier like "Mark" would be sufficient to identify you in a context or the Russell family which existed at such and such  time and place.  Iow, by adding context, you can relax the necessity for globally unique identifiers.

Imho, RDF has not really taken off, principally because it went through a tortuous process of over rigorification.  I wasn't  aware that you ended up using so many fine RDF tools.   I never did find any that were practical to actually get any useful information in the here and now.  The pay off was always way in the future.  A future that required everybody invest in it now for zip pay off now.   Too bad, i though it had a lot of promise.  If i am still around in 10 years, perhaps i will take another look.

Only 2 more years to go. How’s it looking now?

I also notice that the RDF industry ignored my suggestion of using context to make the the triple more natural to write … but that JSON did it out of the gate … with the context (and usually even the subject) given by where the JSON statement appeared.    See my original proposal …

of course nobody listens to me, so they go down the wrong path laugh.   nonetheless exact communication in quad like structures is growing on the web … just not in the way people expected … is that not always the case?

Interesting experience on this. Forgot what RDF was. First tried an rdf tag on the page I was on. It took me to a big tag room and after looking for a while, still was not sure. Tried a search rdf … the first one on the list with a much higher ranking (29) took me right to the thought that fully explained rdf with great links to google on it too. The natural ranking zeroed right in with stunning relevance. Still trying the tag thing, still falling back on what works.
well yes … but when you were doing a rdf … you were basically navigating my mind about rdf … and i never did write anything about it for somebody who forgot what it was … so it was like looking in the mind of an Eskimo to see what snow is all about.   You would have done better to go rdf then follow it to Wikipedia … er, 2 clicks.

… well 3 clicks … Wikipedia has a disambiition page thrown in.  I bet you did far more clicks and reading and selecting results with your search rdf.
