Why does RTE fail with opera browser ?

For items it shows the standard input screen (no rte stuff).
For comments it shows just the say what box.
Too bad this is my favorite browser.
It is of European origin (I think Norway) & i'm not sure how popular it is.

Is this still a bug or problem ?

I believe the problem is that opera does not support the javascript functions that allow any rte box to work.  Their stated reason is that Opera is a strick standards only brower and the rte boxes depend on custom M$ or Mozilla javascript features that have not been legislated by the W3C.  (incidentally i may be wrong about this being the reason .. im going from flaky memory w/o current research)

Can you find any rte box anywhere on the web that works with opera ?

However, the rte box should function as just a text input box.  Does it?

YEP, still does. The upload buttons for RTE on items are missing & just an edit box appears for comments.

Seth says
ok, so is the screen functional as such w\o the upload etc ????

The rte and some icon loads fail.  Here is the RTE as seen from Opera 8A:

Notice the main controls are not there.

Yes that is the way the original authors of the rte box designed it to work .

So those features are simply unavailable to opera users.  Iow, it should function exactly like the comments box do in the room displays.  However it would be nice if we provided some alternate methof of file upload and media from the web, and that is possible, perhaps a super sanitized box that functions just for those browsers that dont provide javascript functionality to support rte. ....  don't wait up for it.

Seth says
but the question im asking above is whether you can still post items sans the special feature from the opera add screen. can you just post a new item? can you edit that same item ? what does it look like when you edit an item that was made on another machine in the rte box ? ie and geiko ?

Mark de LA says
I would just float a disclaimer on Opera - the quote marks on the comments are not there & some pictures take forever to load. Other than that It is a better browser than FF.

got another RTE box on the web in mind ?

Seth says

are you saying that your's looks the same ???

Mark de LA says
This is definitely NOT what I see on Opera, but I do see on IE.

It is interesting that Opera has a feature to identify as Opera, Mozilla or IE but it still doesn't seem to show the RTE in IE or Mozilla.

i think this paragraph, if it is true,  explains that :

FYI here are the preferences in my opera8a browser:

unknown says
Firefox has built-in rich-text editing controls that Gmail and other sites automatically draw from; IE uses ActiveX controls to do the same thing. Safari and Opera do not include a built-in rich-text editor and do not have support for the JavaScript element that controls the editor, so those browsers are very limited in rich-text support. Safari 2.0 and Opera 9 have partial support but since it is implemented in a different fashion than IE and Firefox, most sites don't take advantage of it.

I'm wondering if pure javascript editors like jotspot, [see: item 2225], that do not rely on these browser specific features, will work better.  Do you know?
