You Folks Deserve to Pay an Arm & Leg for Gasoline !

About: george f. will - the gas prices we deserve - washingtonpost.com

It is almost like the liberals & environmentalist dupes have done it on purpose to wreck the economy & turn America into a 3rd world nation. You voted for them & now you are reaping the rewards. Maybe you can arrange to move to China or Russia & live the good life! Of course you can't get there without oil. (maybe a sail boat after the shit hits the fan.)

Drilling is underway 60 miles off Florida. The drilling is being done by China, in cooperation with Cuba, which is drilling closer to South Florida than U.S. companies are.
...Your representatives put this oil off limits as well as ANWR during the Clinton years. And Clinton put some of the biggest coal reserves in the World which are in Utah off limits to help out his buddy Riady in the Lippo group.

Some energy policy:

ibid: ...
America says to foreign producers: We prefer not to pump our oil, so please pump more of yours, thereby lowering its value, for our benefit. Let it not be said that America has no energy policy.

Some political views on why you folks still deserve high oil prices.

Another thing you might factor in is air freight domestic & foreign. BTW, a solution might be to develop a huge 350 mph hydrofoil that doesn't explode going across the oceans. That won't work on the continent obviously.

There are still no electric or solar jets.
Don't need them.  All you need is an electric car with a good battery that plugs into the grid.  That is not technology that needs to be invented. It just needs to be productized and sold.  No big infrastruture switchover.
I think you need to run the numbers a bit.  The power it takes to lift a jet most likely exceeds what you would get out of batteries which add a lot of weight as well. Then too factor in the cost of building a tunnel or road from Washington state to Japan if you are not using air transportation.

Obviously i wasn't talking about aviation when i mentioned plugging into the grid.  That will still need to be some kind of liquid fuel.  I would look at a distillate of algae oil.

Re: We can't drill our way out of the gas crisis.

It might be interesting to have a spreadsheet listing all the various kinds of energy investments (offshore drilling, Alaska, coal, together with the alternatives wind, solar, etc) and how they translate into barrels of oil and what the Roi would be for each project.  I don't see why a crash building program of alternatives would not necessarily be just as profitable and pay off just as fast as the drilling projects.  Until we see all these projects, honestly estimated to the best knowledge of the people actually involved in them, we will not  know.  Until then the only info we are getting is just partisan posturing.
Might be a good idea. Why don't you start one. I was about to start something on Pelosi's constant stance that
Pelosi: ...
Oil companies are sitting on 68 million acres of public lands
... & 2 years ago.  The questions that need to be asked & answered on her excuse not to drill are:
  1. Which lands are producing & not?
  2. Why are some lands not producing?
  3. What is the difference in the cost of exploring on leased lands vs those where we may know that there is oil?
  4. Why are the oil companies not drilling if there is oil on these lands.

Slate has an interesting article on some of this with links to land leases & non-producing. While it may be an industry secret what the business model looks like for new oil exploration & pumping costs from one site to another it would be worth while digging it out.

As far as your alternatives go, consider first that the oil infrastructure is extensive & the others are not (including solar & electric automobiles). There are still no electric or solar jets.

The other questions that should be answered are:

  •  What are the time to market considerations for each alternative including infrastructure?
  •  What %% of the current oil/coal energy market will these alternatives take over?

Mark de LA says
I'm serious.  The questions need to be asked:
  • How much will a particular alternative produce relative to oil energy. What is the ROI?
  • How soon can it come online (includes infrastructure)
  • Another thing that is often ignored on the science channel is does a particular alternative take more energy to produce less energy - like algae (so far).

Before oil & coal get killed off we had better keep the economy, science & manufacturing sectors in good health to develop the alternatives.

Mark de LA says
As I read it, there is the extraction process which uses energy & they use electric light which also consumes energy. I would have to see some real numbers to get excited. A lot of people can multiply, but very few can add up the numbers.
good luck!

Yes it's a serious project and if done correctly would take a lot of work.  I'm obviously reluctant to start it because of my past experience of taking such projects serious with you.  They turn into another excuse for rwg and partisan bloviation.

There have been some recent advances in this field.  Now i believe that there would be no energy that needs to be input to the system.  I pasted 2 articles below to support that opinion:
