Flat Tax = Voter Empowerment

About: Wikipedia articles on Flat Tax

In the haste to sock it to the rich one of the best solutions is overlooked - implement the Flat Tax.  It's not popular because of class warfare demographics. However, many different versions exist. Remember that when 50% of the Here is the Wikipedia's take on what it means.
If I had to explain what it means in fewer words, it is designed such that the tax burden of supporting the functions of government is divided equally amongst the citizens covered by that government.  It would have a floor to protect those who are in extreme poverty or who cannot work or earn. It would also eliminate the vast set of political loopholes for everyone.
I like the idea because it enfranchises everyone to have a vested interest in how the government spends your money.  If you got a bill each month for your share of the cost of all governments (or just the Federal level) you would scream holy hell when Congress spends money for pork & ineffective social experiments just to get re-elected.  In effect, it would tie a string from your big toe to your representatives in Congress (where all spending must be authorized) & you could yank it hard when you are displeased.

It would end the taxation without representation that is increasing as we speak! In case you don't remember, such was a large part of the cause of the Revolutionary War that created the USA in the first place.

This is a s 3rd street solution & I approve of this message!

It moves in the direction of removing economics out of politics which is a group threefold society aim. By having economics independent of the rights & governing domain less mischief, like the $billion presidential election, happen.

This Wikipedia article is actually quite good.  Note the even handed presentation of both sides of the issue and the lack of partisan spin, propoganda terms, and personal insults.  I wish we had more of that going on here at fbi.  Anyway i can heartily agree with a total elimination of loopholes and the simplifying of the tax code so that the government is not always trying to incentivise and punish according to political whims. However, if the motive here is to distribute "the tax burden of supporting the functions of government equally amongst citizens", then you must come to grips with this argument ...
source: Flat tax - Wikipeida
... "since the  marginal value of income declines with the amount of income (the last 100 of income of a family living near poverty being considerably more valuable than the last 100 of income of a millionaire), taxing that last 100 of income the same amount despite vast differences in the marginal value of money is unfair".
Note you use the term "burden" and i think rightly so.  The fact of the matter is that $1000 taken from a person making $20,000/year is far more burdensome than the same $1000 taken from a person making $2,000,00/year.  There probably is even a formula that can calculate that burden.

What is more important than any of the arguments against distributing the burden of taxation is the fact that doing so will put some severe downward pressure upon government spending which in turn will shrink those mothly payments to the government.   I have said that there would/should be a floor to those who are severly in poverty & for, in your terms, are worrying about their last $1000.

Again, when > 50% of the electorate realizes that they don't have to pay for it & realizes that they can vote for free money & circuses every day the game is over!

A perfect democracy, a "warm body" democracy in which every adult may vote and all votes count equally, has no internal feedback for self-correction.... [O]nce a state extends the franchise to every warm body, be he producer or parasite, that day marks the beginning of the end of the state. For when the plebs discover that they can vote themselves bread and circuses without limit and that the productive members of the body politic cannot stop them, they will do so, until the state bleeds to death, or in its weakened condition the state succumbs to an invader — the barbarians enter Rome.

... I shall look for the quote more directly from Heinlien some day in To Sail Beyond the Sunset.  Great picture of the pigs in government on Radio Free NJ.

FYI, Looks like the substance of this quote came originally from "the 1943 speech, Industrial Management in a Republic,  by H. W. Prentis, president of the Armstrong Cork Company and former president of the National Association of Manufacturers". (see Wikipedia here

Perhaps an inspiration, I like Heinlein's as more image provoking. I'm sure the thoughts have been around since democracy was invented.
