an old ai linguistic buddy

About: panlingua.net

I met  Chaumont Devin about 5 years ago on comp.ai.natlanguage .   He has a apparently very effective natural language parser. I'm going to meet him while he is staying here in Bellvue.  Who knows, maybe we can run his program in the background of fastblogit and automatically hyperlink items to their appropriate titels.

Here called me this morning ... here is his first email to me.

Seth,

Congratulations on your mastery of php to the point of making it actually
do something!

I also thought it was great to be back in touch with you, and, yes,
tomorrow evening after 7 is fine.

>hyperlinking them.

Give me this or something else that requires my knowledge and not too much
time and I will do it for you free of charge while I am in town.

The who, what, when, where, why & how of events covered in a news article on google & linked to a [thread link] would be nice for the group UnhackTheBrainproject.

Seth says
Well i can ask him if that is feasable. Let me see if i understand the request. Given a article, parse out the english text of it separating it from the markup and advertisements and other unrelated materials. Then out of that parse out the attributes where, what, why, wehen, who of any events that were mentioned in the article. Did i get it right?

Mark de LA says
yep! any start would be helpful. I think it is still an unsolved problem of the "information extraction" domain. I think they can determine people& organizations (who); time & dates (when) but the rest is not so clear.

Seth says
it would be helpful to have a referente to a benchmark text

Seth says
manually marked up with what you would ideally require for your project

Mark de LA says
Yes, that would be nice & it's not likely to happen before your meeting. I would just like pointers to anybody he knows that can extract the exact content of a text and determine what the content is.

Mark de LA says
In other words extract the content into a Mentograph displaying who are the participants; what they were doing and to whom; where did it happen; why did it happen (most likely reporter speculation); how did it happen (again speculation like via what agent or manner; when did it happen (date/time) etc.

Mark de LA says
Could probably use their tracker to monitor permalinks in FastBlogIt.

There are some things from Copernic that are something like that called "summarizers" - I don't know whether they could reduce a whole item to a few words but you could see:
Copernic Summarizer   These are the guys that had the best web crawler until Google came out.

Mark de LA says
PS. Their tracker is useless on a permalink. It picks up changes in the advertizement as well as the taglist and does NOT check often enough. We still need the RSS feed.

Seth says
this meeting is scheduled for Tuesday evening, today
