Hyperpartisan Headlines

About: Transition Staff Contacts with the Governors Office

If you read the headline on Drudge below you come away with the meme that there is new  substance to an Obama/Blagojevich scandal.   However the release of the memo from the Transition Staff tells the opposite story:
source: change.gov
The accounts support your statement on December 11, 2008 that you “have never spoken to the Governor on this subject [or] about these issues,” and that you “had no contact with the Governor’s office.” In addition, the accounts contain no indication of inappropriate discussions with the Governor or anyone from his office about a “deal” or a quid pro quo arrangement in which he would receive a personal benefit in return for any specific appointment to fill the vacancy.
Yet Drudge shows us ...
Foxnesw is not much better, their headline is "Obamas Top Aide Spoke to Blagojevich, Internal Review Shows" ... as if that was news or even unexpected.

I don't know about you, but i'm sick and tired of news outlets reporting hyperpartisan headlines.

Actually the most interesting part of the report was the last entry:
source: change.gov
Dr. Whitaker had no contacts or communications with either the Governor or his Chief of Staff,John Harris. He did have contact and communication with one individual purporting to act on behalf of the Governor.

In the period immediately following the election on November 4, 2008 " on either November 6, 7 or 8 " Deputy Governor Louanner Peters called him at his office and left a message. When he returned the call, Ms. Peters asked who spoke for the President Elect with respect to the Senate appointment. She explained that the Governor’s office had heard from others with recommendations about the vacant seat. She stated that the Governor’s office wanted to know who, if anyone, had the authority to speak for the President-Elect. Dr. Whitaker said he would find out.

The President-Elect told Dr. Whitaker that no one was authorized to speak for him on the matter. The President-Elect said that he had no interest in dictating the result of the selection process, and he would not do so, either directly or indirectly through staff or others. Dr. Whitaker relayed that information to Deputy Governor Peters.

Dr. Whitaker had no other contacts with anyone from the Governor’s office.
Which shows to me that Blagojevich was trying to open a path to Obama and that he was definitively rebuked by Obama himself.  Why don't these partisan rags report that?

This kind of hyperpartisan reaction serves to degrade the credibility of those who persue it.

It's all a matter of whose ox is gored, eh?  Go  back & find out how many Bush-bashing headlines turned out to be incongruent with the headlines offered.  I think I complained about this kind of thing in [group UnhackTheBrain] many moons ago. Global warming is another favorite headline distortion.

BTW, you distorted somewhat in not including Drudge's headline - just the picture.
I don't know what your looking at ... i included Drudge's headlines in the picture i copied off their website.

Hyperpartisanship is disgusting from whichever side it comes; but reporting in the headlines the opposite of the substance of the news, as in Foxnews case, seems to me to be a violation of their public franchise.  Btw, can you find other cases where the substance of the news was opposite of the headline?  Left or right ... i don't care.  Let us vow to make hyperpartisanship a thing of the past.  Start the newyear and the new administration right!

Actually I heard him say it (both on TV & Radio) .
Well i went looking for that and could not find it.  Instead i found the other messages i quoted above.  I think you heard somebody misquote what he said.  Please find the exact quote in context and source it.
Note what is written, as of this post, at Wikipedia regarding this:
source: Rod Blagojevich corruption scandal
In a December 11 press conference, Obama stated that he, his staff and his transition team  were not involved in any corrupt activity, and that his administration has been exonerated by the 76-page FBI affidavit. He stated that not only has he never engaged the governor on the topic of his Senate seat, but "I am confident that no representative of mine would have any part in any deals related to this seat."[29] His administration compiled a summary of who might have known what at various times.
So if you can document your meme, you should update Wikipedia accordingly.  Otherwise you really should admit that you have been mislead by your memory or the media.  I think correcting these misapprehensions is important, don't you?

I don't think that the internet blogs & websites are a public franchise in the same sense as TV station & radio licenses are. Were any of the radio or TV headlines (not their websites) as misleading?

Mark de LA says
My question is whether the headline is true or not. In the beginning BHO claimed in public statement that nobody on his staff talked to Blogo about the senate seat.

Mark de LA says
Actually I heard him say it (both on TV & Radio) . He's like any pol who finds himself in the middle of controversy or scandal. The first thing he does is deny it. Then gradually as the facts come out he spins it as if of course what he was saying then aligns with the current facts etc. I never blogged this about this case because I was waiting for Fitzgerald to make his case in court. Usually the attempt to cover up or minimize the political damage gives worse results than a straight forward accounting of the facts in the beginning.  Notice the dead of night document drop in the middle of a holiday with the primary participants not available during the Christmas celebration.  I predict that when Fitzgerald finally completes the investigation that the BHO team will call it all old news.  I think Fitzgerald should be fired for incompetence & bias. Again, it all depends on whose ox is Algored!

The Drudge headline is in big red letters.
This is an old windmill for me. I don't care to chase it at this moment. Even Rush Limbaugh has talked about many examples recently, possibly even today (although not this case).  It is fascinating that the guy who started it all, the prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald, also did a hatchet job on the Valery Plame CIA leak case.  Nobody on your side complained even though he knew that the actual leaker was Richard Armitage. He persisted until he got someone in the Bush administration hoping for Cheney, Carl Rove & others.  He even knew that no criminal law was violated (as stated by the person who wrote the laws in question) & yet he pursued the matter until finally he caught Scooter Libby in a perjury trap.  Did anyone complain about all of the Valerie Plame headlines? In this case with Blogo he stopped short of trapping someone before something could happen, why?
The question here is what is Fitzgerald's take on the matter? If there were some culpability at some level do you trust BHO's staff & his campaign website to disclose it?
... actually I do.  I trust Obama.  I will continue to trust unless  he proves untrustworthy.  Now i do expect Obama to spin with the best of politicians- but i seriously doubt that he will be perpetrating the level of deception that we experienced in the current administration.

I also expect more transparency.  Compare the disclosures in the current document to the actual contractual information presented by the Bush administration at the beginning of the Valerie Plame affair.

Note, my friend, there is no scandal here ... move along.  Or at least wait until there are facts in evidence that support wrong doing.   Don't be so anxious.  Hyperpartisanship just erodes your own credibility.

My question is whether the headline is true or not. In the beginning BHO claimed in public statement that nobody on his staff talked to Blogo about the senate seat.
Actually what he claimed, was that he was absolutely certain his staff was not involved in any deal-making regarding his successor.  Fyi, here is all he said in the beginning.  Did you just make up your bold statement, or did you just quote it from some right wing blog or commentator?

Anyway the point of this item is to become aware of the point where the media and the blogosphere, in the absence of incriminating facts, goes beyond what is known and starts operating simply on speculative questions for partisan gain.  That point has been reached and exceeded in this case.  I call it hyperpartisanship.  It is destructive to our body politic.

Mark de LA says
Again you are making partisan into an n-word!  You obviously didn't read the WND article to find that BHO's campaign people had to exert undue influence upon already established standards for the *.gov internet suffix.  BHO's people apparently thinks that campaign slogans are governmental departments:
source: ... The GSA, which manages and supports the basic functioning of federal agencies, specifically limits coveted '.gov' websites to U.S. government organizations at the federal, Native Sovereign Nation, state and local levels. These may include governmental departments and programs as well as cities and townships represented by an elected body of officials," Judicial Watch said.

"The agency specifically forbids political or campaign information on any '.gov' website as well as any tax-exempt, nonprofit organization that can engage in lobbying or political campaigning," the organization said.

However, "Obama's change site proudly features the Obama-Biden Transition Project, a 501c(4) organization that actively engages in lobbying and political campaigning. The website also uses Obama's favorite invented term of Office of the President-Elect, which is definitely not an official government office," Judicial Watch said.
... I think I'll take the coin for your style of argumentation as hyper-ostrichness & hyper-sphinctermindedness

The point is it wouldn't matter whether I found it or not your own hyperpartisanship would nuance it into something else. You are tilting at an old windmill.  Don't try to remove the beam out of my eye while you ignore the one in yours while trying to make partisanship into an n-word. 49 million people did not agree with Obama during the last election. He didn't make that go away by being elected.
It is really a binary judgment ... either Obama originally claimed in a public statement that nobody on his staff talked to Blogo about the senate seat, or he did not make such a claim.  I'm just very curious where you got it ... and i'm shaking in my boots that you can find it.  I've been looking and i can't.  If you find it i will most certainly acknowledge its existance.  If you think about it, it would have been an exceptionally stupid claim to have made.  My only interest is if you can find the exact quote in context; and if it does not exist, then i find it extraudinarilay interesting how it got into your mind.  Don't you even care how contrafactuals creep into your mind?

And i admit to being partisan ... even poking contrafactual fun occasionally.  But no, i do not engage in  this hyperpartisanship.

FYI, Change.gov may not be an official government website - just Obama jumping the gun again!  He's not officially part of the government until sworn in. Just more BHO agitprop !!
Actually, to qualify for a .gov domain, it must name either a state or city agency or it  must be a "U.S. Governmental departments, programs, [or] agencies on the federal level".  In the case of change.gov it is the official site of the Obama transition to president of the federal government.  Obviously he cannot use whitehouse.gov until after inaguration - and he may not use it even after that - it may just stay change.gov.  Change.gov functioned perfectly for the purpose of releasing the information that is the topic of this item - i knew exactly where to look for the official document - untainted by the media - and i found it there within 2 minutes of its release.

Again your strange reaction here is continuing to be hyperpartisan - you look for fault where none exists.

source: ... (AP - 12/9/2008)

Obama said Tuesday, "I had no contact with the governor or his office, and so I was not aware of what was happening."

We know, that was the quote i gave you the audio for above. Note it does not support your claim above that  "in the beginning BHO claimed in public statement that nobody on his staff talked to Blogo about the senate seat."

Seth says
Funny you would cite the same WND that was hyperventelating about the Obama birth certificate to question the official government action of the GSA.  I guess we will be seeing much more hyperpartisan bs comming from this site.
But facts are facts: the Obama-Biden Transition project started during the campaign - as such it probably did engage in political campaigning. The change.gov domain was originally filed for before the election and was granted and paid for by the GSA the day after Obama was elected (see below).  After Obama won, they opened the site with lots of materials that were still at barackobama.com.  But shortly thereafter all the campaign stuff dissapeared and was replaced with transition materials, information to (and interactions with) the public about future intentions.  There is no need for further campaigning.  Your complaint has no substance.

Source: GSA memo dated 11/5/2008 retrieved by Judical Watch by Freedom of Information Act.

These actual documents retrieved by Judicial Watch under the Freedom of Information Act  make for interesting reading in a dry kind of way but do not bear out any claim of "undue influence upon already established standards for the *.gov internet suffix".  The transition is paid for by the GSA and is authorized program according to the Transaction Act of 1963.  Apparently the same thing happened in 2000-2001.

Where is the article that outlines what BHO thinks about the escalated Gaza attacks by Israel after they started a few days ago?
All i can find is this ...
source: cbs
“President-elect Obama is closely monitoring global events, including the situation in Gaza, but there is one president at a time," said Brooke Anderson, Mr. Obama’s chief national security spokesperson.

According to an Obama transition aide, the president-elect discussed the Mideast situation today with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. “They discussed the situations in Gaza and in South Asia. The president-elect appreciated the call and the information from Secretary Rice. He will continue to closely monitor these and other global events. The call lasted approximately eight minutes and was initiated by the president-elect," the aide said.

Obama will be receiving an intelligence briefing today and the White House will stay in touch with the transition team, according to White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe.

"Hamas must stop launching rockets into Israel. The United States holds Hamas responsible for breaking the ceasefire," Johndroe said in a statement today about the Mideast situation. "Now the ceasefire should be restored immediately.”

He also urged Israel to avoid civilian casualties. “We want the ceasefire to be restored, but we understand that Israel is reacting to the hundreds of rockets that have been fired upon the innocent people of Israel over the last few days,” he said
The one president at a time is kind of important don't you think?  His spokesman, here, is repeating the official position of the United States.   Were he to say more, then you all would be accusing him of jumping the gun.

As to what he is thinking, we already have what he said during the campaign:
source: cbs and many others above
“The first job of any nation state is to protect its citizens. And so I can assure you that if -- I don't even care if I was a politician. If somebody was sending rockets into my house where my two daughters sleep at night, I'm going to do everything in my power to stop that. And I would expect Israelis to do the same thing.”

We will need to wait till after the inauguration to see if he can be any substantive help in this 60 years conflict.

So do you think this is a bad headline ?

see ***
(actually it's a picture of BHO on the golf course in Hawaii telling the onlookers to be quiet so he can putt.)

Yep, this is another hyperpartisan headline.  It associates pictures of Palestinian's plight with Obama's vacation.  This is not news, rather it is finding fault where none exists. Not only that, but the premis of the headline is false ... we already know Obama's opinion - he released it shortly after the conflict began, and we also have what he said during the cmapaign.  This "news outlet" is squeing their presentation to make Obama look bad.

Mark de LA says
There is no Virtue in anti-polarization! If wrong proposals & bad laws are being or about to be passed, coming together to pass them is just more bad policy. The majority has the responsibility to win over the minority by good proposals & good laws which stand on their own as wise & good for everyone.  See what the Democrat majority in congress has done for partisanship this last term here & here. The last election, far from showing everyone wanted to be on the same page, did not give BHO a blank check nor a mandate!

US must take the lead to avert eco-disaster
