Analysis: Giant Teleprompter Telegraphs Obama Caution

President takes no chances in his second prime-time news conference, reading a prepared statement from a massive TV screen, but it was no help during the question-and-answer session.

Just to put this item in perspective ...
source: Bob Cesca
ATTACK: President Obama uses a teleprompter when delivering prepared remarks. This clearly means he's a moron and intellectually incurious and incompetent and hopelessly doofish. Impeach! Impeach!

This one appears to have started with a February item by Dean Barnett in the self-satirical Weekly Standard in which he wrote that President Obama is unable to deliver prepared remarks without a teleprompter. You mean the president doesn't memorize his speeches like other modern presidents? And by "other modern presidents," I mean zero other modern presidents. Shocking.

Then, earlier this month, Carol Lee wrote a piece for the Politico. Her angle was, in essence, that President Obama's New Fangled Word Squares from Outer Space sometimes make it difficult for photographers and videographers to get a clean view of the president. Poor, poor news media. Why does President Obama's teleprompter hate America?

In the past couple of weeks, the teleprompter attack has gone full-blown viral among far-right tea baggers and bloggers (who, by the way, still haven't "gone Galt" as promised). Michelle Malkin, for example, posted a series of terrifically unfunny photoshopped images of the president and his teleprompters. Drudge ballyhooed a hilarious blog written by -- get this -- the president's teleprompter. And random members of broader wingnuttia have taken to calling the president "TOTUS" (Teleprompter of the United States).
... This morning during his Afghanistan speech the president, reading from the teleprompter, briefly misplaced an "or" changing the meaning of a sentence.  No doubt we will hear about it from the teleprompterpresident.

Notwithstanding, i keep being amazed by the actual technology.  That they have contrived to allow a speaker to maintain eye contact with  reading and we you never see the script is fing incredible!  I would love to see one of these contraptions up close.

It's been around for a long time. TV anchors stare & read a screen just above the camera. You can't tell that they are looking just above the lens. There have been heads-up displays for jet pilots for a long time with instrument readings & targeting info in the window in front.
The point of the meme is that if Obama really had a set of core beliefs he would be able to expound on them clearly & consistently without a prompter.  He & the left poked fun at GWB for bungling a word or so & not being a slick talker like Clinton & yet he needs a prompter to come across as good as slick Willy, eh?

A better comparison would be between extemporaneous speaking and written speeches.  Well though out writing certainly deserves its place on the political scene.  Michael Gerson, of the Washington post, said it this way: ""A teleprompter speech represents the elevation of writing in politics. And good writing has an authenticity of its own".   I can certainly understand that Obama's ability to expound both extemporaneously and with his own writing must frustrate his opposition to no end.  I can sympthize with your plight and the pathetic attempt of this website to amelerate your pain.
Pure bullshit! You can't recognize that your candidate is at best an hypocritical empty suit & at worse a Manchurian Candidate.
What is interesting aside at this point from the hypocrisy thread is that Your candidate & his minions who decried Rush Limbaugh for saying he wanted Obama's policies to fail were funded by George Soros who is having a wonderful crisis these days by selling short (betting that the economy will get worse) in essence betting on Obama's economic policies failing.

Mark de LA says
Should he give it back? George Soros' Wikipedia biography & political action against GWB is documented here.

Have you noticed that Limbaugh always speaks extemporaneously (look it up!)? He has core values & principles & speaks from his heart; as a conservative he doesn't need somebody to write his speeches! He claims he doesn't even write his own speeches.

Yeah i know, Limbaugh made a big point of saying that ... thanks for repeating it .  Btw, Obama, unlike most presidents before him, writes many of his own speeches.

Your attempted n-wording of Limbaugh notwithstanding, have you noticed also that Limbaugh is not running nor is he in political office? The fact that he said it before merits repeating because those on your side didn't get it.  Your claim that Obama writes many of his own speeches is suspect but probably supported by their cut-&-past similarity of generalities, pathos & symbolism over substance.

Of course it's rwg.  Thing is i don't like to get my political opinions and rhetoric from people who's motive is to be as outrageous as they can to raise their ratings. It goes against their credibility as clear thinkers.  Coulter does the same ... she will say anything to sell her books.  Iow, i would repeat these clowns to get a laugh, but not to get at wisdom.

Apparently you must listen to Coulter more often than I do. Limbaugh's ratings are not based on outrageousness but upon the clarity & values of conservatism. I believe in the freedom of the individual to seek his own destiny & happiness unfettered by an opressive big government. The framers of the constitution defined a limit to government. It was NOT for government to doll out rights to the people given on high by government. Most people need a new civics lesson. Nowadays government is looking for new ways to get around the limitation & inventing new rights such as the right to intefere with private enterprise.

that "it merits repeating" just goes to vindicate the cartoon I posted above.
That it merits repeating is because you have drunken the kool-aid.
Where did you get the "kool-aid" meme from ?
I think the kool-aid meme came from Jim Jones & the People's Temple.  It fits nicely to Obama & his rock-star like entrance, Greek columns & all, to his nominating speech there in Denver & his European speech in Germany. Girls fainting & adulation & allegiance where there is more symbolism than substance - hope & change, hope & change......it hasn't changed much since he was elected, but now he can actually can do damage. See this page in the Urban Dictionary.

No, silly, who first applied it to Obama?
I did, didn't you notice - keep up with the conversation!
Gimme a break 1,130,000 citations and counting! My question is: where did you first hear it?
Some day, probably not anytime soon, this stupid thread will end. The answer is I don't know. It was on TV, radio, & the blogosphere as you point out. Which one I first heard/saw it is irrelevant - it fits!!!

Well it's fun to find out where the memes that you keep repeating come from.  I will hazzard a guess that Limbaugh coined it.  When i get a chance i'll try to prove it.

It's been around since Jim Jones, but shoot your stick! You on the left can do your best to n-word Limbaugh, but some day you will wake up & figure out that rule 5 & 11 of Alinsky's Rules for Radicals is just that! A rule for radicals. If you actually wanted bipartisanship you have to have something of substance & core values which fit together as something to move towards for all human beings. Obama just isn't it!
It's not Limbaugh i'm lambasting, it's you for repeating him.  Limbaugh is funny as he extemporaneously bobs up and down rambling about his core values.  He's making a lot of money entertaining you all.
Well, like I suspected this really isn't going to end anytime soon! Why? Because it is the essence of the RWG, remember:
Unlike liberals, I applaud making a lot of money - it's not a zero-sum game. You can do it too!  Too bad left-wing Air America can't do that because nobody wants to hear the sniveling, depressing crap they spew!
