On other fronts this item is no surprise  since it is always assumed that if AlQueda got control of Pakistan they would use their atomic weapons. What is a surprise is the face on the pronouncement that would do so. I can't find the timeline in the newsfront for this in google yet. Sounds like desperation from AlQueda since they seem to be losing in Wazaristan.

google Obama Budget or here from the POLITICO (blog) is a note on the slight of hand by our fearless leader:
~POLITICO: Obama administration points to cuts in $3.55 trillion federal budget
source: ... And Obama aides scoffed at suggestions that the cuts being showcased Thursday amounted to little more than rounding error in a $3.5 trillion budget.

* Obama's cuts would be far eclipsed by the more than $94 billion in new "emergency" spending to continue paying for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars this year and to increase foreign aid and battle a possible pandemic flu.

DUDE, What happened to ending the wars & saving the cost?
FYI, the budget is nothing but fiction, usually congress spends what it wants anyway & passes a resolution to lift the ceiling on the national debt each year. The deficit is usually what the difference is called. This year the deficit will be somewhere near 1.7 trillion.

That's 1,700,000,000,000 $,$$$,$$$,$$$,$$$ or 1.7*10^12 obviously we now need scientific notation do designate the amount on most home calculators.
the sketchy details are in this document. (to be finished a few days later) after the initial shock dies down (5/11).

OH, & ~MSNBC blames the Republicans: (for the small cuts?)

Obama wants to cut $17 billion from budget

Republicans not impressed, say president should be saving much more

There is nothing uglier than a Drudge headline ... doesn't matter how you judge it ... by the graphics, by the semantics, by the HTML, or by the politics.
... in your shallow opinion, I happen to like it & it rings very true!

Funny how when George Bush was spending for the same reason all he got from Obama & the Congress was a ration of shit .
The emergency spending for  Iraq & Afganistan probably relates to this cartoon:

.. & now the estimate of the deficit baloons from the January estimate of 1.2 to 1.8 trillion which is a 600 billion $$$$$$$$$ shortfall dwarfing the mere 17 billion that Obama trimmed from his budget. The next shoe to fall is probably the takeover of the healthcare industry where some more bullying will surely astonish us & remake healthcare into something that Americans will find unrecognizable to be related to.

Very informative article

source: ...
USA TODAY -  used federal data to compute all government liabilities, from Treasury bonds to Medicare to military pensions. Bottom line: The government took on $6.8 trillion in new obligations in 2008, pushing the total owed to a record $63.8 trillion. The numbers measure what's needed today — set aside in a lump sum, earning interest — to pay benefits that won't be covered by future taxes.

... see 11989  This article is talking about the next level up from budget deficit to national debt to the total amount which the government has pledged to pay, i.e. total liability.

I repeat this here without verification, thanks Yglesias.  But if it proves to be true, then me thinks Republican hyperventaliation about Obama's deficit spending in his budget should be moderated.

When is Obama ever going to grow up and quit blaming his profligate spending on somebody else. THis is about as good as his 150,000 jobs saved.

Above: ... On June 13, the CBS Evening News devoted a story by David Martin to the Afghanistan death count reaching 2,000, as Martin interviewed a mother of a fallen Marine. CBS was alone. There was no story last week on the Afghanistan death “milestone” on ABC, NBC, the PBS NewsHour – or even on the MSNBC programs found in Nexis, including Rachel “Our Military’s In a Perilous Drift” Maddow.

But the networks were all more aggressive when the 2,000 mark arrived in Iraq on October 25, 2005. The Big Three networks devoted 14 morning and evening news stories to the death toll from October 24 through the end of October, and another 24 anchor briefs or mentions. They used the number to spell “disaster for this White House.”

From one point of view the war could have ended in a negotiated peace with the Taliban. I'm not so sure, but here is some insight as to why it did not happen.  Apparently Obama is no master of foreign policy & diplomacy.
