Replacing live search

Live search very frequently hangs my Fire Fox. When this happens the entire instance of FireFox is not accessible. Eventually the search responds, but it takes so long that it usually causes me to cancell the entire process. I use tag search a lot on fastblogit and this situation is becomming almost intolerable.

I don't know how to fix the real problem with the Ajax java script routine. I don't have the time to diddle around with it.

What i propose to do is to convert the search to a straight forward forms search ... type in your argument and hit the search button. I might alos lop off the title search as i never use that. If i have time and if it is easy i would like to replace that with something like a text search of the text in the body of items.

Update 8/5/2009 Simple tag search has been implemented in the river. We will try it out there for a few days and if all is well, then implement it in the other rooms.

One thing i use live tag search for is to check what the "correct" spelling of a tag is before i affix it. Note the three different spellings of the same tag on the left here. The more people check their tags before affixing, the more useful our tagging will be. Our users should not be penalized for checking their tag spellings.

I think you should have a button for the list of all tags somewhere. That would fulfill the need for the spelling of the tag.

I use the google tool bar with the search site icon when I want to find something or some word. Trouble is that it selects the river sometimes & the river has changed to something else. I don't know if you can tell google to leave the river alone or index just whole items & comments then the google site search would be more useful.

You can get a complete listing of all the tags by clicking the go with nothing typed into the input box.

i'm gonna install it in the rest of the pages. Sometimes the old stand by technology is better than the flashy new stuff.

When live search is replaced with fixed search as is now in the river, move the search box up next to the nav buttons and we will get more width for item in group and tag rooms.

I know that google site search is not a good system to emulate. It must depend upon the snapshot of the river at the time google digests the fbi website. Apparently they don't go deeper that the first page of the river. (just my guess). Hopefully nothing depends upon what site search depends. The tag search is fairly well liked from this point of view. Please don't fuck it up.

Nothing i have planned would affect how Google indexes our pages. My proposed changes only affect the search of our own tag database. And today i noticed a way to slightly improve the display. Also tag search should be on every page, even news ... never know when you want to make a search.
