Thomas Mann - A Quote

About: Google books quote source page

This quote is provided in the context of a book called The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann & John E. Woods.  I found this quote in looking for something now lost in my memory.  Apparently this was part of some Socratic dialogue in the book.  For me it says that tolerance is not always good. Perhaps those who seek the perspective of those who started a terror war on 9/11 might ponder whether in tolerance they have lost the way.
In today's politics one might wonder if tolerance should be applied to the bankrupting of the nation by governmental policies.

The thing to realize about "fighting evil", is that fighting it, may increases it.  To decrease a behavior, you don't fight it, more wisely you  ignore it, and replace it with something better.  Does ignoring imply tolerating?  Not really, it's not a binary choice.  One tolerates something that one cannot change ... or that one should not change.  Evil is like that, you cannot fight evil and change it to good.  So to call not fighting evil, "tolerance of evil", and call that a crime, and then use that as an excuse to piss on "tolerance", is to misuse the categories in ones mind.

But all that is generalities .... err "metaphysics" ... which does not help us all that very much with specifics and with actions.  You should have read further into the next paragraph ...
source: readings from The Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann
"Metaphysics is evil. For it serves no purpose except to lull us to sleep, to sap us of energy we should bring to building the temple of society."

So many bad premises, so little time. Fighting evil does not increase it unless you succumb to it, of course then it grows by 1. I'm not sure you can quantify evil in the first place. The word evil itself is rather metaphysical. Maybe TM was describing himself in his metaphysics quote.  We all have different definitions of what that is.
Matthew 6:24: ... No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
...mammon being money or materialism.  This quote from J.C. apparently makes it a binary choice at least when you are talking about two opposites - good & evil.
      There are some that believe that evil can be transformed into good & that even in the end (at the end) the Devil will be redeemed. Note: I say transform & not change. Change just stirs up the same old pot; transform adds new dimensions - just like Love is a new dimension when looking at extreme egoism vs extreme materialism both versus man.  Which brings to mind:
    You brought up fighting evil, I didn't.
Matthew 5:43-44: ... Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
...Apparently the Golden Rule still applies to your enemies.
   Your being hooked by the metaphysics quote did not disappoint me. Metaphysics is not the same thing as generalities & there are many different definitions of what metaphysics is. The definition of tolerance varies as well.
Online Dictionary: ...
  • tolerance - a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry.
  • a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward opinions and practices that differ from one's own.

...sounds like a nice thing until you apply it to something that is the exact opposite from who you are & what you stand for that wants to destroy you & is intolerant on it's own. It reminds me of the old joke about what do you do to change a pacifist's mind:  slap him upside the head.  And if he doesn't change his mind, slap him upside the head..... etc. ad infinitum.

Ok, here is a direct example of struggling against evil and thereby increasing it.  The more i respond to your comments, the more you comment.  The more i ignore them, the more they go away.

That's just the RWG!  It takes a personal transformation to make that go away!
Nope, just takes ignoring the evil.

Sorry, sometimes i back slide ... forgive me my trespasses  ... or tolerate them.
You ask the wrong being for forgiveness there.

Mark de LA says
I take offense that you regard my posts as evil. You are just in the RWG. That's a part of human programming that will fall by the wayside some day.

Evil is in the eye of the beholder.  Actually its not so much that your posts are evil, its more that my response to them makes them increase which, to me, is evil.

Take what offense you need.

If you can be as in:
Matthew 5:43-44: ... Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. 44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
.. then surely for any banal or profound definition of tolerate you would have my blessing &, I suspect, anyone else on the right.
.....
But as for those preaching tolerance while incongruent with it I offer this quote:

Albert Einstein: ... As far as I'm concerned, I prefer silent vice to ostentatious virtue..

For the tolerance minded lefties & maybe some righties as well has anyone considered that Obama's often touted killing of bin Laden left behind his many widowed wives & his many orphaned children? ... (;

Some discussion of tolerance on Facebook ...

...

... a rather intolerant example!

sorry mark ... too cute for me ... i have no idea what you are really saying, if anything at all.
Yep - must interfere with your recent quest to end up in Barflett's Quotations or someplace similar; congruence with ignorance of the language possibly being a stumbling block!

I still don't know what "ignorance of language" and/or what that (ignorance?) may or may not be congruent with has to do with my sentence.  Please note that this sentence does not define the word "tolerance" ... there are many many very wise sentences which are of the form {x is y} which are not to be considered definitions of x.  So, sorry mark, i am left just as baffled about the meaning of you comment as i was before.
DUH!   "Tolerance is ....."   is a definition; bullshitting pseudo rigor notwithstanding. It is even stranger that you "got it" on facebook (unless you were being sarcastic or lying).
