Pattern & Change

About: Chart of Weekly Weight Cycle

I've established a pattern of semi-fasting Monday and Tuesday and eating one reasonable mid day meal the rest of the week with perhaps eating out on Saturday or Sunday.

You can clearly see the weekly cycle for the last two weeks here.

The trick is to start the week on Monday less than the prior Monday.  This week i started Monday .8 lb less than the prior Monday.

Some people don't like these kinds of habits ... they like to be more spontaneous and not be tied to keeping a habitual pattern going.  Me, i like the reliability of a habit and trip on trying to improve it.  The habit becomes a structure in which you can work.  Sans the pattern structure, chaos will reign supreme,  and your affect is lost.

Mine goes up & down the way it does because everytime I see I've lost significant progress I correct it by some more stringent eating.
IMHO, eating prunes (& in my case I also eat dried apricots along with them), flushes out a lot of water & dehydrates the body.  It does work, but is only suitable for someone who lives close to a toilet!

Well mine goes up and down the way it does because i intentionally semi-fast Monday and Tuesday.  That is kind of like your way in that the fasting was originally in response to the semi-gluttony that usually happened towards the end of our week here.  What is different is that i have intentionally institutionalized that ceremony, rather than just allowing it to manifest itself randomly and unpredictably.  It does give me a bit of a feeling of being in control and it does allow we to study fluctuations within that structure of which i would otherwise be unaware.

Our difference is that I am not even near my maintenance or target weight yet.

Well, what i am toying with here is a behavioral invention ... or intervention.  I'm going to call it the "Stroke".  Kind of like the Tony Robbins thing only it precedes the action rather than following it.  You do something dramatic to change your psychological context when you recognize that you would otherwise fall into undesirable behavior.  My fasting for two days at start of week is such a Stroke; because otherwise i would just keep gaining weight.
While I understand that your Stroke or what TR calls your "move" is a stroke of genius in your toolbox of plastic habits, what you describe as it's purpose the NLPers call a "pattern interrupt".

Yeah my "Stroke" may be similar to TR's "pattern interrupt"; but not of course their "move".   The other context of the Tony Robbins stuff is that it seems to me to be  targeted at big dreams and what might be termed improving the foreground of your life.  While that is important too, my Stroke is targeted especially for the background of one's life ... the little stuff ... even the minutia.

Seth says
Another way of looking at this is that it's all about the composition of moments.  The moments we experience are important.  If they are not important than nothing is.  So the tools to compose those moments are methods we should seek and learn.

Mark de LA says
I don't appreciate the difference between correcting the intake before or after a weight gain. Maybe before helps temper the oncoming excesses, idk.
TR's "move" is a stack of good anchors to be triggered before a moment when extra excitement can improve the quality of the moment. A pattern interrupt is any sudden loud (signal wise) behavior which interrupts current behavior; the more bizarre the more effective.
Using another metaphor from a different system, I would say that you have implemented an "existence system" to keep your weight near your target range banancing binging with fasting.

Seth says
Well you could call my eating after the fasting days "binging" only in comparison to not eating at all.  But yes, even so, there are times when i eat too much, like going back for seconds on a meal where if i waited a moment i would find that i have already had enough.  That is one behavior that i would like to change.  Also my habit of spooning down taste of sauces or dips that i am experimenting with.  Once i like the taste i tend to keep spooning it down the rest of the day.  If i manage to eliminate those two, then the slope of my increase towards the end of the week will be slighter.

I've know a couple of people who i respect who also fast on a weekly basis.  I like it, it's a healthy habit which tends to shrink the stomach and reorient you to be accustomed to hunger and trip on that feeling, instead of fearing it as something that must be eliminated.  I'm also like how it introduces a predictable pattern in what would otherwise be chaotic variation.

I need to get several more "Strokes" implemented before i can say much more about them.

Btw, Mark, i have no idea what you are refering to when you say "the difference between correcting the intake before or after a weight gain".

If you remember the graph before I cut it down to the last couple of weeks or so you would have noticed it. I don't follow the NBHD rigidly.  The question was more which plastic habit to adopt, but I don't need the answer any more.

Good thing because i'm not even sure which plastic habits work for me, yours certainly would be different.

I follow the NBHD suggestion that if I notice a gain of more than 4 lbs then I go back to the strict 4 day regimen this adjusting my food intake after I experience a gain. I could do that in the reverse order by doing the 4-day regimen (or a fast) first & then eat whatever I want for the following days.

I don't see on your graph where that ever got tripped.

For me, my enthusiasm for the art of cooking plays against any further serious attempt for me to loose more weight.  But i would like to get down another 5 pounds at least and fluctuate between 175 and 180 instead of 180 and 185.  If nothing else, then to just prove that i have control of the situation ... LOL.  Denise, on the other hand, is more serious about it and has reached a new low today ... Kudos to her.
