I'm not a fan of Facebook. In decoding their name I find: [Wikipedia diaspora] is not dissimilar to [Wikipedia choronzon] both perhaps demons of dispersion. They say the language of implementation is Ruby - not a great choice but a convincer (to some) that they may get it done in a hurry. If it can get done outside of the Internet or at least peer-2-peer it may have a use in view of new governmental powers contemplated for the president to shut down the Internet in a perceived national cybersecurity emergency.  P2P, though is still dependent upon the Internet in some way. What they provide that does not already exist is unclear.

Here is a good example of what is happening on the open identity front.  Strangely enough that server is using what is probably the closest thing to CyberMind on the internet today .

From what i hear, it is supposed to wrest control of your identiy and your social network from the Googles, facebooks, myspaces and the twitter companies and give it back to us the "small people".
Won't that give results with response times like the servers little people can afford? Google works because it's response time is within a few seconds.
I don't know enough about what it is or how it will work or about what it is supposed to accomplish to even start to think about it that way.

I found out about Diaspora in the context of looking for a solution to the problem created by every website asking you for your user name and passoword and the problems of changing and remembering those.  As you may know there are several proposals for that on the table now ... openid, foaf+ssl, not to mention the more proprietary ones like windows live whatever,  and google login, and connect through  facebook and or twitter.   If Diaspora catches on i would use it for my sites.

I did get far enough into this context to make the design choice that i needed to make to be compatable with what is possible to happen in the future.   The essence of that choice was to choose a "blank node" within the named context, "people" to represent the identity of my customers at speak to me catalog.  A blank node is identified within the system as a unique string (like ident10985485476) ... external to the system you could prepend it with the http domain name.  Then whatever a particular customer was using to identify themselves is just a named arrow hanging off of that node.   Currently i will just use the old tried and true email and password.

Of course another one is  OpenID ... perhaps i should put this markup on all group pages here ...

I think that the genius of this approach is that it could reorganize the internet from a what-etc. centered to a who-centered organization; seeking people out who know what you want to know or want to buy instead of saying here is something I have to sell come & look. It depends upon how it evolves whether it becomes useful.  In school I could go read a book for information or I could seek out a teacher who might know some of the answers or a more useful place to look.

Mark de LA says
btw, try doing that on facebook & see how far you get!

Seth says
Well the new social web, primarily twitter and facebook, is already very who oriented.  You compose your own stream of awareness by choosing who you follow or friend.  It does help people focus the internet to be targeted to them.

Any actual examples of this yet or is it just software? I hope they do a better job of tags & topics.

i don't know much about it ...
source: there is perhaps more at their website
   The privacy aware,
   personally controlled,
   do-it-all,
   open source social network.
... when it comes out i'll probably try to get it working.

More anti-anticipation "Diaspora, the anti-Facebook, is doomed"

This has got to be a first ... releasing the source code prior to starting Alpha testing.  Me thinks this might be just a little bit a geeky project.

C says
They want someone else to find all the bugs. It sounds to me like they have done very little testing.
