A call for identity on the web ...

About: [foaf-protocols] webid-linked claim verification?

source: Dan Brickley said:

If we assume the possibility of a simple Web app that allows users to demonstrate simultaneous control over multiple accounts, the natural next question is re what it does with that info.

Well perhaps answering that question:  one of the biggest use cases for identity on the web is where some website, say a shopping site, wants to know  who a person is  so that they can communicate with that person.   All we, the website owners, really want is a open source library given to us with a function to call which would return some identity string to store in our local database.  When we need to send a message back to the person all we really want to do is to send a message referencing that identity string.  The library takes it from there, and we, the site owners, are no longer concerned with details like verifying email addresses, twitter accounts, or even in which protocol the client prefers to get their messages.

I really appreciate Dan's call for a verification of claims and hope that it will inevitably dove tail into that library i so desperately need but can't write myself.

In other words.  I want a library with the following 4 functions ...

$id = signup()
$id = signin()
sendMessage ($id, $message)
getMessage ($id, $message)

I don't think I mentioned secrecy - I called for security of the information.  Privacy is a right some say is in the constitution (hence abortion). Identity theft is my main concern.  Nobody I know wants to fake someone's fat ass except for bad movies.
Well, me thinks, you actually are just talking about secrecy.  I know of nothing  suggested in this item that is intended to increase a person's vulnerability to crime, surveillance, or identity theft  ... but if you've spotted any security holes in the  the protocols being discussed, by all means please bring up the specific concern.

What I worry about whenever such things are discussed is security.  The database itself might be secure, but there are lots of people who would like to link other stuff to it like SS#, credit card ID's, rfid locators & of course the US Government claims the right to track people with GPS. You may already have one in your cell-phone. There are already rights concerns related to facebook & employment. Some potential employers may look up you facebook page to figure out if you are somebody they want to employ.  Most online businesses ask & trap the information they need to carry on the business. I don't really see what functionality you are missing.

Well actually the  whole point of WebId, to which forum this call was posted, is to put control of the information one discloses into the hands of the individual.  That said, me thinks that secrecy is a highly overrated desire ... unless, of course, you are a celebrity.

And please ponder this, should you covet your secrecy, when you venture into the mall, everybody can see your face ... it is virtually in public ... not only that, but so is your booty (case in point illustrated).
