About: Burningbird

source: my comment on her blog
Well i plan to allow fastblogit.com users to subscribe to whatever feeds they wish hence replicating the items in those feeds within their groups. Discussions can then ensue on those items within the group and the items can be tagged and otherwise processed by any manner of intelligence as yet unimagined. I though that this kind of fluidity of information was what makes memes work in our cultural mind. Unfortunately I can see that some people will be holding on to their productions like they were pearls which have a single purpose and a singular viewing location. What are you afraid of happening to your words?

I.E. This is what it looks like when you only recycle your own material !

Well she has a very nice web site and reading her on that site is always a joy and she expressess herself very well there. But I think that she is bein very short sighted by trying to keep her audience restrained to that single location. The more widely her words are distributed, the more traffic she will get, the more people flocking to her site to drink from the original fountain. I think that she is just so close to that site that reading her words elsewhere just feels wrong to her. In any case, she would be fighting a loosing battle, and one where the more progress she makes against this distributed foe, the more damage she would do to her own cause.

If there is an automatic method of restricting the use of a feed (robots.txt or whatever), then any automated tool i make would respect that restriction. The robots.txt on this site has nothing in it that I can recognize as a restriction on the feed. Nor is there any mention of restrictions in your feed itself.

I understand that it is you believe that "syndication feeds are NOT meant to be republished other than for personal use", but what about those of us who have a different attitude twards our feeds. Are we to be forced to adopt your restriction ? My feeds are available to be processed and repeated in whatever manner web intelligence can provide. Do I not have that right?

Let us be practical. How are you going to enforce, or even effectively communicate the restrictions that you are proposing to the automated processess that are starting to appear in the blogosphere ?

To get the whole dialogue, you need to visit Shelley's site as I am not repeating here comments here.

How about feed applications that go beyond blogging ? For example an application where one can affix ?intentional? tags to items in the hope those items will find their match at a foreigh site, see tag room for sticky cyber molecules. The point being that for this kind of application to work, items must flow freely. A patchwork of exclusions will just get in the way.

I think that you may want to stand back (outside of the name calling - sorry for that) and ask yourself, where it is going to hurt you to allow your feeds to flow freely ? ? and how much loss of time and energy it will cost you to stiffel that flow ?

Fact is I am a big fan of Shelley and i think she knows it.  Her site is magnificant!  You are not getting Shelley unless you read her at her site and if I am interested in one of her articles, then i will go there to read it.   Now as to what you are saying or implying ...  ... well i have no clue .

I am wondering how anonmous lost her link... anyway plagarism is the sincerest form of flattery IMHO.  Being totally ignored is my prescription!

I've always considered ideas & thoughts to be generated in the cosmos to which our senses sometimes have access. Therefore I tend to agree.  On the other hand I believe somewhat in copyrights & similar things in order to sustain capitalistic goals in this medium.  If you found her behavior & selfishness regarding content on her website to be repugnant then publish your ideas about it on your own FastBlogIt.

There is a lot of competiton in the realm of ideas both on and off the Internet. To be ignored is probably the greatest disappointment!

if you make your data public, you necessarily lose a great deal of control over it.
from Adam Marsh's comment.  I though this was so cool and true .. that i have to repeat it.

Information is not like physical property.  It is fundamentally different.  The value of information lies in its ability to be repeated and still remain useful.  If it can be used in only one spot, in only in one context, then is its value is substantially diminished.

i re-found this from trailing a guest on our new tracking page. Wat is kewl is that i had lost the item because it was not tagged.  Now it is found .

What would be more interesting - not knowing wtf you were talking about originally 10 years ago is to make fbi searchable with the google's site search. The other day I searched for chimera & could not find the one you finally located.

that is why tagging and getting them spelled consistently is sooo important .
Yeah, I think you were the one who misspelled it.
