A new web design paradigm

Perhaps is't just me but i actually expect that page design on the web is going to start changing dramatically.

source: I have raised this issue in a facebook note

Big screens allow a designer to try to dazzle their audience with as much visual impact as they possibly can.  Not only that but the fact that primarily you get one page to entice your audience to engage with your site ... so you naturally try to put as much in that one page as you possibly can.    That, up till now, has been the driving perdicament of web design ... so we end up with many websites with lots of 'crap' on one page, lots of choices, lots of columns, and lots of confusion.  Personally i think that is bad for not only the visually impaired, but also for us sighted surfers.  But that may be changing.  With the advent of practical web access for smart phones and pods, we have to adapt our sites to a smaller screen.  On those devises single column, simple direct screens communicate much better.

and in a web design forum ...

I would, however, like to raise the issue of screen widths on a multi-column website like yours. Where is there a best practices guideline published ? It seems to me that mixing widths on pages where the #footer width is 960px and the #context width is 739px will mean that when the page is viewed on some screens the right side of the footer will not be visable, and on others it will extend way to the right of the content.

I need some guidance on how best to design pages so that they collapse nicely on the small screen of a pod, and expand nicely on the large screen on my desk and everything in-between. So far the best page design that i have found that seems to solve all these problems is www.456bereastreet.com Does anyone have a better example site?

This item will focus my awareness of this new web design paradigm.

Another gripe i have with the display of our current web on various screens is that all to frequently one needs to adapt the screen to the content ... but me thinks that should be automatic and the content should expand or contract the the screen and not force the reader to expand or contract the screen to the content.  People have learned to do this now and they don't think it a big bother, that is true ... but it is a nusance.  Especially on the pod, where to read a page you must expand one column with your fingers to be able to read it confortably.  Right now one needs to do that on almost all websites.  I think it is time for web designers to make that easier for readers.

How about adapting the WWW to be seamlessly viewed on a Dick Tracy wrist watch sized web appliance? I thought HTML5 & CSS 3 were doing? Or perhaps we are waiting for HTML 6 & CSS 6

Yep HTML5 and CSS3 do, imho, have the solutions.  Deploying those solutions will cause this new paradigm to come into actual existence.   Inevitably as the screen decreases in size to the wrist watch, me thinks the expression of the content must needs become auditory.

port = "brain,Seth,view/audio"

.. Very well.  Certainly, yes, the server should have securely identified the client so that yes, it can echo their identity string in the CSS ... and yes giving the client the choice of whether the content appears in their visual plain or their audio space is a nice touch.  Are we ready to submit this to the W3C yet ?  ... you know they keep insisting on demonstrable implementations preceding working groups.
My fMRI test machine is still on order; got any spares?

... or telepathic.
... but if you had a neural interface that projected content directly into your consciousness, would that not be telepathic ?  But, me thinks, it is a bit premature for us to start designing our HTML pages for that?  ... i mean what would the CSS be ... viewport="brain" ?
