A share button where the sharing person gets to select the advertisement propagated. So people seeing the advertisement will understand that it is an endorsement from their friends. Do it like

F1 in Firefox 4.0 is showing advertisements on facebook ... see my status update here but i should have been allowed to choose from a selection of advertisements. That way i would not have felt like i just spammed my friends on facebook.

Thing is, most of the things I buy are not on impulse from ads I see on the Internet. I doubt that anyone else has the distinction selective spending. It will take a while to spread it.

I tried F1 & it screwed up Firefox & all it did was hang out in the process queue. I uninstalled it & it worked again.

Huh? What did you uninstall and what ended up working? What version of firefox do you have? The latest is 4.0 and i will bet it would not work in any prior version.

What did you think of my idea of allowing the client to choose the advertisement that was displayed?

I have FF 4.0 & installed the add on or extension. Finally I got a version to boot & unplugged it & now FF4 works just fine.

The idea doesn't thrill me. I want no advertizements. At best I get rid of them the quickest I can.

Yeah i think most people look at advertisements, no matter in what media they appear, as unwanted clutter in their space. But in the current marketplace they are an essential tool for merchants to get messages to people about their products. My question is, assuming that advertisements will be cluttering your space anyway, wouldn't you prefer that they were recommendations and endorsements from your actual friends or people who you trust or people you know and follow ... as opposed to just companies who happen to pay to clutter your space ? It is a serious question, and it deserves a serious answer.

Well, when you put it that way - sure! OTOH, I prefer selective spending where I can learn more about the company & its business practices etc. From the spam already showing up on facebook because I "liked" stuff & shared my music tastes I'm not sure that is going to be the way to go. In my local grocery store they put tags that say "local product" next to the prices. That sways me, all other things being fairly equal.

I prefer ads targeted to me because of my likes and interests rather than ads which are directed to me just because i happen to be watching some media. So that is an improvement. But if i know the ads are not only targeted to my likes and interest but also selected by my friends and people i trues, that would be a big improvement for me. Were that the case i think i would pay more attention to the ads. Strangely enough i haven't herd this discussed in advertising circles yet.

This mechanism might also help you with your selective spending. If you followed liked and friended groups which believe as you do, and if they were selecting ads for you to see, then me thinks you would pay more attention to those ads and would your selective spending would be informed by your like minded peers.
