Integrating big screen TV with Internet and Mobile

Some things to compare ...
i finally got my photo streame up into the cloud and can now view it as slide show on the big screen tv.   a slide show of my pictures is like my memory streaming by.  it is a way for me to perceive.  settings can be changed and pictures can be automatically associated randomly .... hmmm, maybe those setting can't be changed ... dont know yet.

Last known update for Google TV from Engadget- note the part about "future input devices will be more streamlined and simpler to use than the current Logitech and Sony affairs" which is good news because those interfaces sucked.  Would i switch my pod to a Android if i could control the big screen with it ... well probably if Apple doesn't do it any sooner.

hmmm ...

Of late, i'm wondering whether Google TV, and others like it are not the wrong direction. Why not just connect a computer to the TV set and use it as a monitor ... control the mouse and keyboard wirelessly. We don't need no stinking restrictions and walls and worries whether brands have signed up with Google. We just want to watch and interact with what catches our attention with no restrictions and walls whatsoever. I'm mad as hell and i'm not going to take it anymore!

Follow the money - it's all about advertising & revenue.  My new blu-ray DVD player (the oldie broke ) gets me to YouTube, netflix & a slew of other content providers like Hulu. They all come via Xfinity (Comcast). I wouldn't watch a program on an iPad (or a Dick Tracy wrist watch) even if I had one. I do like netflix & YouTube though which provide content much more interesting than the basic networks. I am curious why Apple let slip that Jobs was working on how to do TV like they did the iPad (or whatever the hype was). The genie is out of the bag though.  A lot of people are disgusted with what they get on the basic networks for free + advertising.  Google had their own box to play blu-rays, but it was more than double the cost of the one I got. The keypad for search on the google device is much better, though. Search is going to be the biggie.  We will need a Drudge Report like thingy for content. YouTube is a bit fk'd in places.

Are all websites interesting to a TV screen user? Don't they need a port with multi-media video like YouTube or something else? If I want to surf the web I use my desktop. I don't want more flashing light boxes in my living room.  I think at one time I connected my tv to the internet with simple rgb output from my computer. What's the big deal there? That was about 17 years ago. My only complaint is I can't get simple apps to play on my desktop. There needs to be a better simulator/emulator for that.

Well i don't think anybody can (or should) make the determination of what "websites are interesting for me to see on my TV screen" !  That is kind of my point.  If i want to look at and hear speaktomecatalog.com or read the news memeorandum.comor watch the live coverage at cnn.com/video/ and if i see a web address advertised i want to be able to go look at the website on my TV screen.

One of the big things with the new HTML5 is that the content adapts to display correctly regardless of the screen dimensions of your devise.  So the consumer chooses to lay in bed and look at the big screen, or sit at his desk, or walk to a coffee shop or in his car.  That is where this is going ... that is what the technology is capable of ... we simply don't need any obstructions put in in our path that serve only to protect some corporations turf.

My Sony Blu-ray player has many channels with expansions possible. Maybe there will someday be a generalist version but the demand & economics need to show up for such. It used to be hard to keep children away from the TV & now it is the Internet - someday we will all get a life!

Yeah the Comcast decoder boxes and modems sits between the spectrum and my devises breaking the signals up into channels and IP addresses.   Having both channels and IP addresses is redundant ... we don't need both ... inevitably the channels won't be able to compete.  Of course they know that and are fighting to survive.

Life in the media or in houses and buildings or in the streets or the malls and market places really is all the same life.  We don't need no artificial stigma or judgements attached to where social interaction happen or from where memes are absorbed or expressed.

Yes, follow the money for sure!  As far as i can tell this is a turf war with the broadcast networks on one side defending their turf against all the barbarians invading from the Internet on the other.  The networks will be holding out as best they can.  My big question then is why don't the hardware manufacturers wire the TV boxes so that the walls are removed.  What is holding that up?
The wall between what & what? Please be more specific. Haven't you seen the Toshiba flat screen advertizement claiming they're puting Wi-fi in their flat screen? ... or is something else walled off?
Yeah i saw that ad and we even went to the store to try to see a demo of it. It seems that they have provided a partial solution which allows you to browse only certain websites ... pretty much like your blu-rey player.  Would you buy a computer that only went to certain websites?

Mark de LA says
So pipe your computer output into your big screen TV & be done.  Add an extra to control all that mess with your iPud if you like. I think that hardware & software all exists right now. I think you are drumming up a polarity/wall that does not exist.  I could be wrong though & that might attest to the lack of my understanding your mind. For everything to be totally cloud-seamless is a bit of a stretch right now & could lead to more monopolies of government or corporations or unions.

Actually it appears that Samsung has allowed unrestricted browsing of the web ... the browser looks suspiciously like Safari and can be connected to wifi or hard wired to the router via Ethernet.

I like the 2-sided remote! With the Sony box I have I must do a grid search for a letter to enter into a search box for a name of a movie or youtube topic.

Seth says
There was also a vague suggestion on the part of the sales person that there existed apps for pad pod and tablet to replace the remote.  I hate complex special purpose remotes and this one would not be any different.

The good news is that they do have this in a screen size that is not too outrageously big and expensive ... but i'm still not ready to jump into it ... the longer you wait for electronics, the better thing you will eventually get.

Shelley Powers If your TV has enough HDMI inputs, I can really recommend getting a Roku as well as the Apple TV. You're not stuck with one vendor, and the new ones even have the ability to plug head phones into the remote for wireless silent listening.

... and my response ...

Seth Russell wow, yes, "wireless silent listening" is a really BIG item on my agenda ... as there are two of us in that room and we are not always wanting to be in the same sound space. thanks, i'll investigate. i was kind of hanging back trying to wait for somone like Microsoft, Apple, or Google to integrate the frigging TV boob tube into my modern life for me .... maybe, i should stop waiting.
