If I look at just the being of the whole mess there is not much of the balance of Mother Nature, life, etc going on there. Your mileage may vary. BTW, I'm not a PETA kind of guy - just trying to be conscious of what kind of being I support with my money & my nutrition. (see also tagroom selective spending). IMHO, holistically speaking, this is really ugly stuff !!!

i'm thinking that killing and eating another being lower on the food chain can never be devoid of violence and all that very gentle to the victim.

Mark de LA says
If you watch animal planet you can get how mother nature eats & is eaten all the way up & down the food chain.  The animals know what they are doing both the muncher & the munched.  My ziggy is not about the violence, but the crudeness that we as conscious beings participate - making a chicken look nice & unchicken-like as McNugget in a "happy" meal. The anchor to how & what is going on might turn some toward a more healthy nutrition. Like I said, I'm not a PETA guy - more like People Eating Tasty Animals but, like someone mentioned recently (Facebook founder) - if I eat meat I would prefer to kill my own animal or catch my own fish.

Seth says
Well i enjoy getting up close and personal with the animals i eat ... butchering a turkey, filleting a fish, shelling a shrimp and shucking an oyster.  For me it is part of the process and i do frequently think of the life of the animal as i cook it.  I do consider it, but in the end i numb out my guilt about it's body.  Kill and eat a body, it is part of this life, and it is, modern marketing aside, a violent process to eat or be eaten.  I make no apologies.

That said, vegetables are probably better for the health of my circulation system ... so i have been trying to deemphasize meat in my diet.

zoom to album , also see Shrimp Gumbo

OMG !  The idea that shrimp are farmed by attaching a long string to their antennae to hold them in a tank, force feeding them and then conveniently cutting the string to harvest them.  ... i mean look at the length of those strings coming out of the shrimp ... zoom to album they can only be necessary for the farming mechanism.

The idea is no less scary even though shrimp do have those long antennae (see the video) and if you examine the base of the antenna it looks entirely natural .

I don't see the documentation for this:
???: ... OMG ! The idea that shrimp are farmed by attaching a long string to their antennae to hold them in a tank, force feeding them and then conveniently cutting the string to harvest them.
...

Shucks i though i documented it quite well with my picture above.  You can verify it yourself by purchasing some farm raised shrimps that are still in their shells with their eyes and tentacles still attached.  You will in fact see the long strings of their antennae.  But, i caution you, to read only what i wrote, and not make any grand assumptions ... but know that i always endeavor to write true sentences.  I still think that all of my sentences about this are true.
It is unclear to me whether the thingies are long strings attached to antennae or just long antennae. Your video showed long-antenna shrimp. Where is the "force feeding" going on. Where are they escaping from? Are they not in a tank or walled in part of the ocean? Did you witness how they are farmed?  I'm not arguing - just curious. I am glad you brought it to my attention.  I personally don't like shrimp - they have too much of an iodine taste.  Otherwise they are like tofu & have to be spiced up to eat. Besides, they are full of cholesterol.  In Japan & some stateside restaurants they will serve the heads deep-fried as crunchy hor dourves. I've done that a couple of times.  Imho, most people if they really looked at the things, would not want to eat something that looked like a big cockroach.

Yeah they are in fact long antenna as my original documentation showed.  But, hey, thanks for playing along with my paranoia.  There was actually a moment in which i did believed it might have been possible ... had to look closer to falsify the daydream.

Shrimp are 90% protine and they eat plankton so they are one step above the lowest link in the food chain.    It's not like eating salmon, or sword fish, which inevitable will come to an end.  I have no problems with eating shrimp and we humans can go on eating them indefinitely.  This is sustainable.  If they had been farming them restrained in tank by a thread, then that would have given me a shudder ... though am not so sure i would have stopped eating them.

There are lots of ways to cook shrimp to make them flavorful.  The shimp you saw in the pictures have been bathing in a bath of lime, lemon, ginger, soy and honey all night ... they will hopefully be happy for my meal at noon.

Hmmm... did I leave out shrimp are bottom-feeders?
