For me the whole point of being accessible is that no matter what senses, or mediums one has available at any given time, one can still get at and affect the matters at hand.  One can still live a full life.   "Universal design" is a philosophy of making new things in our environment such that they are available regardless of the limitations of ones current senses.  That is why mixed media is so important.   That is why obstructing the space is so dastardly.
I tend to agree with just about everything above except your final misuse of the word dastardly.

source: ...
dastardly 1560s, "showing despicable cowardice," originally "dull," from M.E. dastard + -ly (1).
...
Incompatibility is a fact of individuality. There are lots of standards such as IEEE & Bluetooth etc.  As the industry moves faster than the bureaucracies of standards move you will have both evolution & innovation followed by involution & more compatibility.  This is NOT cowardice.  Lots of people misuse the word thinking, more invectively, bastardly in their minds.

Well yeah when i penned the "dastardly" i knew it was not exactly the word i wanted to use, but i didn't have the time to choose a perfect word there.   The idea i was searching for ... and perhaps the sentnece i should have written was ... "That is why obstructing the space should be avoided" ... and then add "even if it means less profit to your company".

I see no intentional obstruction although there may be some copyright & trade secrets being protected as valuable assets to a company that has invested resources to get them. Methinks you are tilting at windmills where patience with evolution is a key factor.  How far do you want to go with the idea, anyway?  Perhaps industry or government should ensure compatibility & accessibility to the least amongst us perhaps aim to make appliances & electronics devices accessible to deaf, dumb & blind quadriplegics equally as those without disabilities.

.... perhaps even the ignorant, retarded & the insane as well.

It is good business to be compatible with as many parts of the market as you can.  It is also good business not to publish your specs to all your competitors as some of them may have a lot more money than you & could compete unfairly with your own inventions.

Well that's where the ADA is going ... but is not necessarily my windmill.

I do like to  acknowledge that Universal Design is a good paradigm to adopt.  If companies do intentionally put unnecessary blocks in a space solely for their profit, that would be dastardly. But more likely they simply do not remove blocks because of the cost would not be recouped.  The question is how effectively can a government be in making the removal of blocks the cost of doing business?

Sometimes an attempt to forced the removal of a blocks can have the opposite effect and actually put more blocks in our space for more people.   I've run into an example of that.  The idea from WCAG that a audio recording should not be published without also publishing a corresponding transcript (availible for those who cannot hear)  will mean that fewer recording will get published and fewer people will be able to hear them.

These are topice which perhaps will be discussed at a11ysea ... perhaps in this session.

The people, so far, do not have the right to control another's profit YET! Lets keep it that way! You & I think differently on that subject. It is not likely to change either - until economics is separate from government & a synergy of individuals transforms competition into cooperation.
