Sherry Turkle, Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, tells us there's a "shift" from an analog world in which our identities are generated from within, to a digital world in which our sense of self is intimately tied to our social media presence.

But this shift to a Facebook world of incessant "friending," Professor Turkle correctly warns us, is a "seductive fantasy" which is weakening us both as individuals and as a society. The problem, she explains, is that a "capacity for solitude is what nurtures great relationships." But in today's always-on social media world, our solitude has been replaced by incessant online updates, which both weaken our sense of self and our ability to create genuine friendships.

I call this shift from the private to the public self "digital narcissism." Behind the communitarian veil of social media, we have fallen in love with ourselves. But this is a super sad love story. Because the more we self-broadcast, the emptier we become; and the emptier we become, the more we need to self-broadcast

You perhaps agree with Alan Watts. Something I watched yesterday in my Alan Watts marathon suggests that you two are congruent at least in your "in the world" thingy.

I still agree with the article in that FaceBook is mostly digital narcissism.

It's neither good nor bad nor should nor must for me.

If the Internet & all the appliances ever gain a will then I'll take another look on that.

Well i think that narcissism is it's own thing and not really related to social media and Facebook. I tend to take a lot of pictures of myself ... even publish them ... i don't think that makes me a narcissist ... what i am doing there is becoming aware of myself visually from the outside as others see me ... and learning to dink with that image. Carrying that to the extreme of an obsession would deserve the label narcissism ... actually i have not seen a lot of that on Facebook.

Well the internet has opened up a hot space where many more human interactions can take place. It is faster than real life .... and because it is not limited by geography ... many more possibilities abound. With all the new possibilities, ... it is in fact all too easy to get lost ... to think that something important is happening when actually all that is happening is you are being stimulated by shallow conversation. I'm thinking: .... as with any hazard, people learn about it ... and then they learn to avoid it's harm to their being ... some people, of course, won't .... and then their lives will consist of that shallowness ... in that regard, the beat truly goes on ... as that has always been there in real life too.

Thing is every body will adapt to the new media in their own way ... bringing to the table their own unique history and predicament. I have faith that no great and permanent harm will come to everyone from it.

"should"-arrows pointing THE way to go. Some go one way ... others the other. A long time ago i chose to seek my value in world and judge my deeds accordingly. That is my way. I suspect you have chosen the other path. That we can still talk with each other is the fun part

well i'm pretty sure that i first heard that idea from Steiner and GW early in my youth. perhaps it was more coded as the mechanisms of materialism deadens the spirit ... you may recognize it more in that form ... but in essence it ends up being the same thing, once you factor out all the ambiguity of the words ... and i believe you ran that one on me just recently.

Deadening the spirit is neither RS nor GW & makes no sense. Read more about Lucifer & Ahriman - extreme egoism & extreme materialism - which would take mankind in a different evolutionary direction from freedom were it not for Christ.
