Drums of War - Africa

About: u.s. expands secret intelligence operations in africa - the washington post

Two things disturb me over this item.  The first is that it shows up in the news.  Intelligence operations should not show up in the news unless you want those who want to do you harm to find out about them. The second is that this seems an expansion of the war to get Joseph Kony, the Ugandan leader of a brutal guerrilla group known as the Lord’s Resistance Army. So far the map here seems small.
This paragraph is the most disturbing as it sounds like the drone war has it's own private army going for it in the form of special forces & private contractors.
WAPO: ... The surveillance underscores how Special Operations forces, which have played an outsize role in the Obama administration’s national security strategy, are working clandestinely all over the globe, not just in war zones. The lightly equipped commando units train foreign security forces and perform aid missions, but they also include teams dedicated to tracking and killing terrorism suspects.
The operations have intensified in recent months, part of a growing shadow war against al-Qaeda affiliates and other militant groups. The surveillance is overseen by U.S. Special Operations forces but relies heavily on private military contractors and support from African troops.
The Post pieced together descriptions of the surveillance network by examining references to it in unclassified military reports, U.S. government contracting documents and diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks, the anti-secrecy group.

Further details were provided by interviews with American and African officials, as well as military contractors.

Some of the U.S. air bases, including ones in Djibouti, Ethiopia and the Seychelles, fly Predator and Reaper drones, the original and upgraded models, respectively, of the remotely piloted aircraft that the Obama administration has used to kill al-Qaeda leaders in Pakistan and Yemen.

...
Personal note: I am reminded that the Viet Nam War started with "advisors" in that country & little by little it escalated & I ended up there, in a war which was extremely dissociated with anything related to United States security.

As with the ICBM & Star Wars races of the last decades, it seems that now (with perhaps the help of the loss of a stealth drone to Iran) we have drone proliferation:

DRONE CAUSES 'UFO' PANIC IN DC...

Chavez building drones 'with Iran help'...
........
Unintended consequences are a bitch, eh?

What it looks like to me is that the US military has changed its strategy for protecting the country.  Instead of invading foreign countries and then being mired down in occupying the entire country ... it is going after the actual bad actors wherever they are hiding.  I actually do prefer the this new strategy.

Of course you assume that you should oppose it just because the other side is now in power.  That will all change when as and if the other group takes over.  Wait for it ... wait for it ...
Finding & decrying partisanship as often as you do reminds me of a pickpocket who worries about his wallet as he combs the crowd for marks.

It seems that the nature of War has forked into traditional war stuff like the Syrian conflict with major powers supporting opposite sides.  And the "war on terrorism" where entities are not anchored to a national state, but freelance from wherever they can find a sanctuary. The latter people seem to be rogue extremists from Islam & some state sponsors like Iran. History is replete with examples of Christians & others who have done such in a much smaller world than that of today & perhaps today's problems stem from yesterday. Tomorrow's problems might show history repeating itself in the coming years.
I think that given the new nature of the latter that the war powers acts & authority should be refined by the U.S. Congress & the people so as to prevent the umbrella of protecting the country turning out to be free license for a president to carry out small wars & operations with his own private air force of drones & special forces & contractors who clean up the mess on the ground. We the people must have an agreement with government as to the limits of what the government can sacrifice our lives & treasure to accomplish.  Such operations alienate other countries & diplomatic efforts & leave out the UN entirely. If diplomacy, the rule of law, & especially the United Nations are good things to prevent wars then they should be used to clean up this mess or they should be defunded!

Well yes, Congress should have the wisdom and courage to place restraints on the president's power to wage an unnecessary war ... however, given the current dis-functional state of the Congress, i seriously doubt that is even possible today.  Perhaps the next Congress will be more functional ... perhaps not.
Congress was more disfunctional when they were all one party & passed obamacare by parliamentary tricks & basic lies.  Now at least horse shit like that can't be jammed down the throat of We the People!

After the hostage situation in Algeria comes the following:
source: ...

The United States has started transporting French soldiers and equipment to Mali as part of its logistical aid to French forces fighting Islamist militants in the north of the country, a U.S. official said on Tuesday.

Paris has launched a military campaign against Islamist fighters in Mali at the request of the Malian government, amid fears the vast desert country could become a launchpad for international attacks.

... Yep the theater is moving to Africa for the next generation of wars .

Yep, North Africa is a bastion of anarchy and weak government ... was there ever any doubt that it would fall prey to violence and the terror of war?
Some proclaimed that Al Queda was through when Ben Laden got popped. War is going South over the East Coast of Africa (Sudan, Kenya etc.)and North to South otherwise. There is no war on terror anymore or is there?

Well I haven't hard that "Al Queda was through when Ben Laden got popped", but then i suppose i listen to different voices than you do.  It does seem to me that the "war on terror" has moved into the lawless areas to which you refer to.  Remember, it was the lawless areas of Afghanistan and Pakistan which bread the terrorism of 911 against which Bush stuck down.
Yep - here goes a 2009 stump speech http://cnsnews.com/news/article/obama-touts-al-qaeda-s-demise-32-times-benghazi-attack-0 to refresh your memory.

FYI & your selective memory lapse apparently he dropped it later after BenGazi proved otherwise!
