What is in it for me?

I look at technology as an extension of my being.  A hammer or a brush is an extension of my hand ... a calculator of my brain ... a telephone as an extension of my mouth and ears ... the Internet as an extension of my mind.

Thing is as the Internet grows and becomes more and more effective ...., me thinks, it becomes more and more its own being.   As i participate in its activities i am part of that  being ... but i cannot honestly say that i am conscious of what it is conscious of ... were we even to be able to honestly speak of what it is conscious of.

All of that is the context for this next question ...

What is in the Leviathan, the Internet being, for me?  What do i get out of it?  Why should i care about it?  Why is is not like just another human being that perhaps i don't even know?  Here, i am asking about the positive aspects of that being ... assuming to start with that it is starting to actually exist.

I think today i thought of one possible answer to those questions.  In addition to it being an extension of my own being (see first paragraph) ... it can also provide activation for my thoughts feelings and actions.

You & I have a different grasp of the meaning of the word being.
Connectedness is the primary lure. Loneliness is painful to most psyches except perhaps those of monks & people who shun what's so for their private thoughts & imaginations.
IMHO,
(of course)

Well i wouldn't attach so much importance to what i think the word "being" means vs what you think it means.  It is, after all, just a word ... and can mean just about anything to anybody.  You could associate to the salient stuff i have said to just about any word that would help you grock it ... like "thing", or "stuff", or "wallaby", or "body", or "animal", or "entity", or "spirit".  It wold be a shame to block understanding what i said because of different in interpolating a word that has very little to do with it.

Actually i wasn't really talking about the Internet the way it is today.  I was looking way ahead to a, perhaps distant, future.   A future where the Internet is 1000 times more capable.   How then will people feel their selves part of it?  How then will people relate to it?  What will their attitude towards it be?

... would expect that from a person who did not understand the word being.  Not a prejudice mor like a prediction!

Incidentally, we are all "stuck" in our culture.  No man is an island.  Of course a person can always choose to isolate themselves to whatever degree and from whatever influences that prevail.  Muslims have actually tried to isolate their culture from modern western influences and cults do it all the time and even individuals go off in the wilderness and setup their own survival.  This ability to join and/or ignore a group which creates its own culture is actually part of the strength of how life has evolved.

In a way i think that The Internet sits on top of all of that ... it does not prevent group isolation from happening, yet it can still provide whatever information resources the group wants.

You do bring up a important point.  Participation in The Internet should always be voluntary ... every individual and group should have the right to use it and relate to it just exactly how they choose.

Don't know, except that is probably Ahriman's WET DREAM so everyone will feel sticky not to mention probably stuck in the web. Similar to this picture:

very funny ...

but not all that very informative ... unless you consider expressing  a "mystical prejudiced" as being informative.

I wouldn't say I am stuck in our culture. If you had fallen into concrete being used for Boulder Dam while it was wet you would have the distinction stuck a whole lot clearer.  It is like the air we breathe or the water that fish swim in.  I ignore it most of the time. I have options. I don't give over my power or being to a culture god.  Your mileage may vary.

Well, Max Headroom notwithstanding, when you have to bank, telephone, watch TV, buy things via the internet (including health care?)  & watch government advertizements - voluntary may be an illusion. Facebook is a voluntary system of collecting information & connections which does the government's work for them in building all kinds of dossiers on the citizenry.

By generalizing a feature of life to an abstract noun named culture we lose our grasp of what it really is.

Well i don't get that at all.

Culture is the environment which we all create for each other by living ... like you say, it is like the "water in which a fish swims".  I see it more as the product of our lives than "a feature of" it ... and I see no reason not to have a great word like "culture" with which to refer to it.

What are you really saying here that is not just about the words i am using but rather is about the processes that i am dealing with?
When you think in abstractions your head is in the clouds not on what is on Earth. Culture is not a tangible & like love & hate could be anything. If you want, go ahead and patent it anyway.

Well, of course, if i say "my right thumb has some shit on it", then i am talking more tangeagley than if i say something like "connectedness is the primary lure".  The former is quite testable, the latter can mean just about anything.   But both of us have  been using these abstract nouns, like "government" and "the economy" and "the environment", all along .... why are you suddenly shunning them?  ... and why in my particular paragraph above?   Do you have something quite so very tangible to say about the same subject dealt with in that paragraph?
