Mac Mini Lock Up

Here is what happened:  I was running Windows7 within a virtual machine in Parallels on my Mac Mini.  The screen locked up with a Windows7 update window showing but did not give me a mouse and the keyboard would not respond.  I tried various things including shutting down the virtual machine but the same thing happened when i restarted the Windows7 partition.  Finally i gave up and rebooted the Mac.  When it rebooted it came to a grey background screen with my account entry login showing, the mouse would move on the screen, but when clicked did absolutely nothing.   I researched the problem and found the solution below ...

3. Reset the PRAM and NVRAM

Sometimes on a Mac, the PRAM (parameter RAM) and NVRAM (non-volatile RAM) can become corrupt and cause various problems. These two memory areas store settings and information that is not cleared whenever you turn off your Mac’s power.

To reset the PRAM and NVRAM, we’ll do the following for Intel-based Macs:

1. Shut down the computer.
2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step
3. Turn on the computer.
4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
Release the keys.

It worked like a charm!

another aspect of this is that after the macs go through a hard reboot, they come to a screen where the account to start is to be chosen, at that point the default mouse settings are still in effect.  you cannot click the mouse pad as you are accustomed to according to your saved settings.  that means that you cannot just tap the pad to effect the click.  no, you need to press hard, with one finger, till the pad "clicks" your choice.
hense it may appear that there is something wrong with the mouse, that it is not working, but it is working fine, it is just working in the default manner.

had this problem again after updating the OS.  I could not click any way on my signon name to enter the system.  The problem was resolved just by moving the mouse pad to a more stable position on the desktop.  Then when i pressed, firmly, with one finger on the mouse pad, i did feel a bit of a give, and the mouse cliked to open the password screen.
