Confirmation Bias

I think it is important to understand the relationship between LOA and Confirmation Bias.

there is some discussion on things like this in Philosophy of Mind group.

Is confirmation bias one of the "The 12 Cognitive Biases That Prevent You From Being Rational" ?

... not that being rational is the be all of behavior and all that it is cracked up to be .

Yep, similarly, Art can be derided or proclaimed - a turd can be art or not. From GW comments on the Yi King in the Tai Shu - magic, a term similar in usage to LOA etc, :

¶(2558) MAGIC achieves feats which cannot be accomplished by those less skilled & knowledgeable, that is all; the motive which makes it WHITE or BLACK is something else.  Every occupation has its own jargon.  Whoever knows how to get the nth root of any number appears to be a magician, awesome to one who can't do it.  FERMATIQUE, like all the other lessons in TAI SHU is a Yogic exercise, designed to foster the G W! Man-made laws can be broken; spies can steal top-secrets; the ALCHEMIST has no fear for the protection is intrinsic! "

Larry Dodson & I once tried to manifest a fish &/or a hamburger while standing on the wharf at The Cannery in S.F. just with our desire & will-power.  When we got back to the warehouse I produced a $5 bill & sent someone out to McDonald's to get one.

I don't know of any real successes in manifestation which start out with the words "I can't do ...., I don't deserve ...., I will fail at ...., etc."

(in the spirit of conversation only)

i mostly made this item to record the term "confirmation bias" because this was the first time i heard of the term.  before i had to stammer around to find a way to explain that phenomena of mind.

i don't think anybody in their right mind can deny that a positive attitude and focus will help navigate to a desired result.  going to a place where others are looking for the same desired results will also help.  but looking for confirmation of that being some mystical law of the world is a distraction from actually doing it.

Well so called magical thinking is a category of behavior for diagnosing mental illness like paranoia & bipolar disease etc. if such is carried to an extreme.  OTOH, the electorate reelected a president recently, some of whom believe he pays their bills, gives them Obamaphones, killed BinLaden, will give them free health care etc.  There are all kinds of ways to believe how things work.

Thought is the clearest consciousness; feeling - dimmer consciousness & will - pretty much asleep. Such explains the trouble of conscious willing. In hypnosis the thought realm is bypassed and the emotion is used to cause someone to do something the hypnotist chooses. Otherwise, hocus-pocus, contemplation, meditation & NLP can get you to trigger the will; my experience says.

well, yes ,  i suppose that a failure of political imaginings of glorified results like we had with Obama and the Arab Spring in Egypt can be taken as disproving LOA.  certainly imagination was cranked up to a fevered pitch ... results were obtained ... yet what was "attracted" was not what was imagined.  is that not just another example of confirmation bias ... err, now in contradiction of LOA?

shit like this is one reason i worship deed in the world not private thought and imagination and the gestalts and satoris of my spirit.  living an inspired story is essential ... but the story moves forward becoming reality by dint of deed alone.

"shit like this" is a failed pointer.  Steiner agrees on the importance of deed, but I'm sure he would not agree with the way you stated it. Deed without some thought before it is as empty as thought without deeds - imho.

"shit like this" was all the things that democrats thought Obama could magically manifest and all the things that the people in Tahrir Square thought would happen after jan25.

yep, "deed without some thought before is as empty as thought without deed" is just your opinion, but if you included emotion and awareness in that as well i might agree.

Yeah, I thought about emotion, but a deed doesn't get started without it. Lots of people do shit unconsciously ... (voters are a prime example).  Yep all 3 thought, feeling & will are in everything at the common conscious level. But, I suppose that is my opinion as is your posting; something we both don't need to repeat much. There are even people who distinguish a deed from action, too!

well i guess it is kind of just my thingy of not being able to effectively think myself into action.  it just doesn't work for me.  i do suppose that others have it quite differently.  for a long time i have supposed that nathan does well with focusing his thoughts and letting them flow into his actions.  if i could do that better i would probably do more of it.   the motivation of my deeds are quite a bit more mysterious than that simple model will allow.   which is not to say that i am any less aware of my will ... more likely i am hyper-aware of it.  i know that most of what i do is done by habit alone ... the good and the bad.  those things are not really even all that very interesting.  what interests me is those things that are done not by habit but spring from a spirit.  and me thinks those do not need to be pre-thunk.  trying to pre-thunk them just gets in their way.  but that is almost certainly just me.

i think when you do something you are just as aware that you are doing it as you are aware that you are thinking a thought.  the question, of course, is are you aware of (conscious of) the cause of the thought or the action.  all i am saying, is that in my being, what i have found is that the thought of an action does not cause the action.  for me, it's like they are in separate domains.

but, that said, let us stand back and look at a whole set of actions.  i can certainly think up a story and then follow it.  i just thought i would go get another cup of coffee, and i did it.   frequently, of course, the actual actions performed do not end up matching the story ... this morning, i made up a story that i would accomplish some quite domain tasks  with a certain attitude and not talk with you, ... but now i have made a start on those tasks, but got interested in making this response.  So i have conflicting stories happening here.

i can work on the stories in my thoughts contriving that the ones i want to happen will seem more attractive to me and consequently i will do those instead of the other ones. i believe that is substantially the NLP and LOA methods.  that works when it does, and doesn't work when it doesn't work.  what makes the difference is not what happens during the thinking  up of a story, but rather what emotions and excitements happen when one specific stories change into another one at the point of action.

lol ... ok ... back to my other story for this morning !
enjoy!

Rational is NOT all there is in being (#BofNK) . See also other forms of rational in this list: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rational#See_also
Additionally, there are other forms of consciousness besides the ones which have rational in them.
Rational is nice in some, not all cases.
The female of the species of homo sapiens values rational less than the male, in my humble experience.
