British scientists have developed a computer program they say can map the mood of the nation using Twitter.

Named Emotive, it works by accessing the emotional content of postings on the social networking site.

The team, from Loughborough University, say it can scan up to 2,000 tweets a second and rate them for expressions of one of eight human emotions.

Similar to Ushahidi & SwiftRiver which was applying such kinds of stuff to Africa about a couple of years ago.

Yep I've been to dinners & parties where a whole lot of people are more interested in what is going on in their smart phones & playing games & searching apps than they are going face to face with another human. Good Luck with that! Facebook & FastBlogIt are not instant videos. Not in the now.

yep, there are of always problems that develop with new technology. most communication is mis-communication and BS anyway whether it is p2p or through the electronic cloud. people put their attention just according to their spirits ... when they suck, they suck. me thinks it will evolve from here to be something that we cannot even imagine. but, of course, you can twist it to be something entirely different and yuckey ... many will ... but many will pay attention to other positive aspects.

me i like to make the stuff i put out on social media reflect the thrust of my true spirit. what i say here means something, whether anybody listens or hears it as intended or not. What kind of media would we have going on here, if everybody did that?

Nothing different. The vast, low-information consumers of blogs & news let others think for them - especially the followers of Obama, even if they give a shit at all which is mostly not.

i actually see this as evidence that technology can tune into and magnify the group soul. we do not feel the emotion in the same way we feel our own emotions ... err, just because we are not the whole group.

For example ... have you ever asked why a thought like this one ...

It is as silly (to me) to be tapping into the world soul with electronics as it is (to me) to be doing surgery on a brain to find consciousness. Doubles do hope to convert the World soul into a machine, though.

well yeah i also think it would be silly, to use surgery to find consciousness.

so of course that is not what I was talking about.

I am simply talking about communication between minds ... and emotionally between souls. That me thinks, is the "stuff" of consciousness. Electronics merely extends our human facutalties ... like a hammer extends our fist.

Well i think when we communicate emotion to each other in whatever media is available, that could be described as "tuneing into" each other's souls. but i am not sure what you mean by "tapping into" ... that sounds kind of yucky.

"tapping into" is a colloquialism borrowed from getting beer out of a keg; dirty minds notwithstanding.

it's just that "tapping into the world soul with electronics" is not what is happening. If you think of it that way, then you will be prejudiced against the app. When you call sombody on the phone, are you "tapping into their soul with electronics" ... no, you are just talking with them from afar.

well, i for one will listen to obama's address tomorrow intently ... who knows, maybe he will change my vote. there certainly is a case to be made on pragmatic grounds that a world where dictators are allowed to gas their citizens must be a world which we must turn away from. also that allowing that weapon of mass destruction weakens our ability to stop Iran and Korea from developing nukes. that said this war is not our business and almost certainly our meddling in it will not help the region stabilize. so i will see if obama can lead my thinking out of its current path.

The Norks & Iran are already developing nukes - O didn't do anything about that that worked. The Russians & Chinese still support such activity while pretending that it's all peaceful - keeps them able to maintain their polarity & slows down the Americans. Putin did the first thing this AM calling the bluff to put Syria's chem weapons under international control. Kerry will probably not get to be a wartime Secretary of State. Most of what Obama says in speeches, as far as truthfulness & reality go, expire at the end of the speech. Shame the UN not the US.
