Life is boring repitition ...

... constructed on startling surprises !

Radio lab frequently discloses interesting subjects.  While the one on "Talking to Machines" pretty much reviews what has happened in AI in the mid 20th century, it gave me some new information and did somewhere in there underline the importance of detecting anomaly ... called, perhaps especially by me, "surprise".

The binary vibrations between ...  right/wrong ... true/false ... in/out ... up/down ... rich/poor ... serve only to keep us within the boring repetitions of a narrow behavioral box.   It is the surprises ... the anomalies ... the unexpected events which get us out of those behaviors.

I hail the surprises in life ... i seek and love them  !

Incidentally and strangely enough the "new to me" term "ego-self" looks like an excellent sign for delving into this subject ... see google ego-self.  I had originally thought that you actually coined it ... but apparently not.
Hmmm.... wasn't looking for coin. The term was used as both words apply; self in the context that Peter Ralston uses it in #BofNK & ego to denote what most people call "I".

yeah, like i said, it is an excellant term ... both ego and self apply ... perhaps they are just different aspects of the same thing.  it was new to me and i liked it.  for me it the edge in your comment, that which surprised me.

i am thinking further now about breacking news this morning and its incessant coverage on all cable news channels (though not ALJAM).  me, i am bored with that event even before i knew about it.  apparently there is enough going on in my life and my thoughts that i am no so bored that i welcome the distraction.   it still is stuck on my tv, but note i am more excited about observing my reaction to it by writing this.  the event itself and the reporting of it is just more of the same.

i did notice tha ALJAM is choosing their stories with a different stratagy as the other news channels.  that is probably because they haven't had time to develop local reporters like the other channels.   might be nice to notice that we do have that as an alternative to breaking news.

what did you notice?
shucks AJAM stated covering it too .
Besides money, a natural motivator for news organizations is the notion of a news scoop. Notice the Wikipedia points to the etymology dictionary which somehow associates a ladle or shovel with the whole idea.  Funny when big stories are covered the commercials are suspended like the Boston Marathon Bomber wall to wall coverage had few if any during the initial hours; thus countering the money aspect of the motivation to publish.  What else do news channels have to do except repeat stories until the "newsfront" subsides & the pundits go home.? I had an initial peak of interest since I used to work there > 40 years ago - but none of the pictures do I recognize. Going postal & terrorism are not that newsworthy any longer except to notice whether they are happening close enough to my family to be concerned. I still remember the Venice high school lockdown after somebody shot someone in the school yard across the street from where we used to live.  I could hear the helicopters over head & look out the window at all the cop cars & commotion, but only learned enough of what was going on by turning on the TV & seeing our house from the top via news helicopter. That was an exciting morning. Nothing newsworthy also goes for POTUS's speeches & news conferences. It has been a very long time since he said anything new or 100% true. I usually flip channels on him or go to the wild animal channels for relief.

Attention is the jism of the ego-self.

perhaps so .   without the consciousness or paying attention we would not even distinguish our selves from the world.   the jisim is when we get it... and, err, like it ... the difference.  no?
Yeah, without consciousness there is little to talk about, eh?Without consciousness, does a tree falling in the forest make a sound - who's to gives a shit?

yes, for sure, consciousness, awareness, paying attention to something is no doubt the activity in which things show up.  even our awareness and the attention we pay to our self-ego.   thing is, what wiggles that ... what brings it up ... what causes "it" to raise above the background of repetitive events.  Me thinks that edge, that difference is SURPRISE is being STARTLED !
I find beauty & art & laughter quite effective as well.  If you really want to be surprised or startled try masturbating anally with a stick of dynamite having a lit fuse!

Well beauty and art and laughter are constructed of, primarily, surprise.  Those are not (not surprise) themselves ... they are not disparate or alternative to surprise.
Laughter may have something to do with surprise, but beauty & art - rarely.  Maybe try the dynamite thingy with an unknown variable timed fuse for best results.

William F Buckley used the word jism in one of his programs in a way that it implied a crude creative influence on something. I can't remember the quote or find it. In essence I am using it here as the creative force responsible for the ego-self including the crude uses of the word as well.

i did get that .  your usage certainly did work.  it even startled in and of itself.   there is no doubt that attention should have that pro-creative component.  it's also interesting to note that "attention is the semen of ego-self" does not work quite so very well.
Actually, in casually watching celebrities - especially Brittany Spears, Lady Gaga, Mylie Cyrus & some others the jism of attention gets so creative that it gets such people to have to do more & more outrageous things in public just to get to the 10th stroke (or hole) as it were.

i think your talking about a different sort of surprise there.   that's more like just trying to do outrageous stuff.  i'm talking just about recognizing anomolies.  things that you didn't expect.  it is a bigger class of recognitions ... of which celerity gross outs might be instances.   next time you see something you didnt expect to see there ... it could be the smalles thing ... let me know ... perhaps that would be the kind of surprise i would be talking about here.

More on jism here in [jism of politics: item 15858]

talking of "jism" is not politically correct.  not only is it slang, but the stuff itself is slimy, gross, and disgusting .... notwithstanding that it feels great cumming our of a pecker.

it is, however, interesting to note , that always being political correct is boring.  That is one aspect of the topic.  To be bored is not to be startled.  Thing is, were we always to trade in the politically incorrect ... to capitalize on that which shocks and disgusts ... is, itself repetitive and boring.  Which brings up another insight or rule.  Things that are common are boring ... things that are rare are exceptional and surpringing.  You have to get just enough of them ... but not too much.
Try meditating on what boring is to you & how it occurs in your life - why people are so afraid of it that they pay lots of money just to have distractions from it & get back to me after the dynamite experience!

well yeah there is the hum-drum of life ... and the surprise events that supposidly get us out of that hum-drum are certainly a commodity.   example:  denise is bored with the syria event ... so  as watching the breakin news this moring about the guy going postal at the navy base along the anacostia she says "at least it gets us out of syria".   and yes, obviously, breaking news is a distraction that gets us away from the hum-drum of our personal lives .... and celebrity lives, along with breaking news, ... becomes a commodity in our culture for drawing attention.

my own attention here is on what i call "surprise" as the driver of  inelegance itself.   the recognion of novely is what instigates what we consider an intelligent response.   i do however suppose, that we can see the cultural recognition and response as the same kind of intelligence .... hummm .

BTW, a study of boredom ends almost abruptly when you do it & become interested in the subject or become interesting yourself.
