public awareness vs private secrecy

..................................................................................................................

When we go into a public space we see other people there and they see us.  We see how they dress, how they smile, and what they do.  Our world is replete with these public venues ... the park, the street, the market place, or a public fountain like the one at the Seattle Center where young people can play and love amongst falling water drops.

I am, ... horror upon horror, i must admit ..., a people watcher.

Nor do I. This commentary apparently went from the topic to privacy concerns to justifying anything in the name of awareness & the new media & technology ... onward to click it off if you don't like it.  Not sure what to do next .... so here goes....
ZZzzzzz...
... so seth plays back, sigh.

the topic was always "public awareness vs private secrecy" and in particular about taking pictures of people in public and publishing as was done in the body of the item.

Anyway the incredible number of pictures being taken and published today needs to be addressed. It must have been increasing exponentially for the last several decades.  Doubtlessly all kinds of information has been similarly increasing.  Does this almost infinite mass of information which impinges on our senses pose a problem for us?  Me, i think not because there is a antidote for it.  The antidote is our natural ability to select and filter.  So the effect is just that each of us has more choice as to what information we have to interact with.

It is really horrible to me how so many people go into a public space never even looking at each other ... actually avoiding as much human contact as possible.

If i were crazy i might see them as these zombie.

I'm sure it did something for you, but for me ? Were you unaware of it until your camera took a picture of it for you?
well, of course, i am not responsible for your awareness and interest ... you are.   thing is, were i to chose to unilaterally exclude you from something that interests me, am i not usurping a choice that more effectively lies with you?

certainly i knew of the mushroom before i knelt down in the wet grass and carefully snapped it.  and i certainly could have just said to myself ... oh a mushroom, so what.  but now i am actually considering whether to eat it.  that would not have happened sans this exercise of awareness.
Consciousness & it's weak sister awareness are a matter of choosing to focus upon one thing & not another. I can focus upon a mushroom without taking a picture of it.  Sometimes the images are forced upon us like on TV & even on the Internet - mutating choice.,  Now matching the mushroom against others to determine if it is poisonous might require a picture.
There is a lot of competition, almost infinite is size & scope for our eyeballs - that was in fact my point - possibly missed.

Well certainly it is not *necessary* to take a picture to be aware of a thing ... or even to be aware of it in fine detail much later assuming that one has a photographic memory.  This particular image was not forced upon me ... rather i chose it ... and those who have chosen to be my friends have already chosen to see the images that i project ... so i can see no *new* force in this new media.

I did notice your "competition for eyeballs" point ... and that it is a reoccurring point of yours.  But i don't think that is in any way a reason against this new flood of photographs ... just perhaps a reason to hone our human filtering skills.  When i friend a person who subsequently posts too many mundane over cute images of cats, i have no problem at all in clicking them off of my feed.

It’s “very handy in the streets when my hands are full,” Ratcliff says. Think about how many shots you miss simply because you didn’t have time to reach into your pocket.

i actually tend to agree.   some people seem to be focusing on the invasion of privacy aspect and therefore miss the point that when you remove the barriers to awareness, it increases.   the easier something is to do, the more people you will do it. witness how many more pictures are taken and published today compared to when we had to use those old film cameras.
I suspect there are NO barriers to your awareness except perhaps YOU. Otoh, how much did you miss because you were trying to take a picture? I knew a man in the navy who hated being in Japan for some reason I never captured, but he loved taking pictures to prove he had been there. He probably couldn't tell you what it was like actually being there though ...

Well there are lots of thing that are barriers to my awareness that i am not responsible for ... industrial secrecy, the grand lack of governmental transparency, and people's obsession with their privacy to name three.  I know for a fact that taking pictures enhances my awareness over time.  Of course i am talking about awareness quite simply and directly and with no metaphysical overtones to it at all ... eg i am aware now that a boy quite precariously took a picture of a girl in the seattle center fountain and she mugged for the photo quite joyfully.   Sans me taking that picture that particular awareness would not exist.

I am unclear how cameras increase your personal awareness except increasing the stack of stuff to be aware of that others are witnessing which of course decreases the stack of stuff you are witnessing because of the duality there. Said better, because you are not witnessing what is around you while you are substituting a picture of something around someone else there appears to be a zero sum game. It is also only a snapshot which can be a distortion [item 16889].

* see here for zoom and more details.

... answering your bolded implied question, you are now aware, should you be open to it, that there is a mushroom growing in my front lawn this very morning.  Don't over think it ... there is nothing mystical going on here at all.  For me seeing that musroom was a first ... i have never actually seen a musroom growing in my lawn ... and i like to be hyper aware of those things that happen to me for the first time .

Seth says
incidentally the very nature of making it easier to snap a photo mitigates the distraction that the taking a photo creates.

There are perhaps other opinions on whether all of that is good or bad. Please watch this interesting interview between Drs. Oz & Sanjay Gupta below: (multiple parts)

BTW, I love the new technology & am amazed at what it has done for our ability to communicate amongst us.  I also am aware that a picture is just a snapshot of something else which really exists (or a movie of one or .....)  . It is good to balance everything out so as not to be confused about it all.  It is also good, imho, to stop & examine occasionally the living stream flowing through our minds & see if it is being stimulated according to our own choices.
