Front Page

This system seriously needs a front page with a digest & explanation of what it is. I know I can chase down faqs perhaps, but I am afraid that newbies will give up before that as too complicated.

and where would this "front page" be? ... http://fastblogit.com/   ??

Actually i think we could get the same effect by expanding the header you see when you click ... so that item would be a kind of introduction and table of contents of the faq ... kind of like a master item.

To implement that we need to be able to put headers on tag rooms.

I had an about this the other day.   Put another option on the add|edit item that would basically say keep this item as the top item in some particular tag room.  It obviously needs to be tied to a tag and a yes|no option.   You could get that same effect right now by just making sure that item was the last edited in fastblogit, faq

In a moment i will implement the plan to  have  got to  fastblogit, faq rather than  group faq.

Seth says
... another would be to have the title of the item be something like

header tag fastblogit,faq

so any item with the title "header tag *" would always be displayed as the first item in the * tag room.

tag rooms don't have the same discipline as groups potentially have. How do you prevent fights over the header of a tagroom?

you don't.  such is life.  but what you find , me hopesangel, is that it won't be a problem.  again, i get my faith on this from the Wikipedia experience.

Though we will have a "domain" group.  That is planned.  This group will have some additonal priveledges to effect things like tags and perhaps tag room headers.   So if you are logged in to the "domain" group (ie you know that password), then you could perhaps lock a tag room header.

Hi Seth,

Thanks for the comments on my blog. Looked at fastblogit?a very interesting concept. Do you have a summary of what it's "about" and where you intend to take it? I got quite a good idea from this page and others, and I can see fastblogit overlaps a lot with my distributed conversations concept, but would like to have a clearer overview.

Cheers,

Luke
apparently Mark and Luke have a common wish.

Any suggestions of where to put it ?
  • http://fastblogit.com/  - is currently the river but i suppose we could move the river somewhere else.
  • http://fastblogit.com/about/ - is a possibility ... that would require a new button on the button bar
discuss ...

What's wrong with the first page of the Faq or the Header of the Faq ?

Seth says
Ok, now has this $wish been satisfied ?
If so, then you should remove the tag $wish.

How do i tag this as a wish that is satisfied but is awaiting the removal of the $wish tag if the author deems that his/her wish has been satisfied.   Such a tag should be an intentional tag.

My i suggest satisfy~$wish  ?

Then when you remove the $wish, you should also remove the satisfy~$wish.   You could then delete the item, or re-tag it, or re-edit it into a faq (by asking a question in the title) or whatever.

the "first page of the faq" keeps changeing as it is just like any other blog ... most recent article is on top.  the header is a possibility, but then the header of the faq would dominate that stream.

Seth says
alternatively we could make the $wish and $bug be true intentional

tags:

wish~grant .... converts to grand~wish ... when both are present the author delets both.

bug~fix .... when fixed gets fix~bug ... then when acked by bugger both get deleted.

that was the was scm were supposed to work, me thinks.

Mark de LA says
I don't think it has been satisfied. The header could have a link to a static page which explains this website to a newbie - maybe 2 pages and then points them the FAQ's (which has a series of questions instead of the residue of the ages.  The static pages could be reorganized to a more permanent set of faqs on static pages.  The doesn't have to use the FastBlogIt format for everything!

PS. for me ~delete works fine or $wish~delete

But that is just you wanting to do it differently than i have (err ... already implemented) doing the same thing.   Now you need to compare your proposal to my faita complete.  As far as i can tell my way is quite superior.
  • It provides the expected "about" in the button bar - people expect that a website describes what it is about under such a link
  • It provides for the ability to have people easily change and edit these pages.  That is something that you do not get with "static" pages.
  • I already gave my objection to using the Faq header to elaborate what the website is about above ... please reread that.
As to ~delete  or $wish~delete.. i dont like it, because we are not necessarily asking that the item be deleted.  The author may want to keep it around for its value as a history of a dialogue, or perhaps it can be mutated into the question~answer that documents whatever $wish was satisfied.  Point being that the satisfier does not know that.  All he knows is that he satisfied the wish and wants the author of the wish to ack that and take it off the wish list or say why not.   I still prefer wish~grant as the simplest thing to type for that.  If you dont like the idea that the wish is granted, then perhaps you can think of another short word that would work,  but if you think about it, a wish is satisfied by the granting of the wish.  That is the way intentional tags are supposed to work.   We are creating a new linguistic game here with intentional tags and the better we can play it the more likely it will catch on.

Mark de LA says
Well, sorry I sent it without refreshing my page to know you put an about there.  Now that it is there I see no reason or chance that it will be any different than what is on the button.
The item doesn't get satisfied until there is a page somewhere, easily accessed by a newbie, that explains it; NOT by putting a link somewhere. Otherwise , here you can have [my check is here: item 0]

Mark de LA says
sorry, that link s/b [here is my check for $100: item 9999]

Mark de LA says
Hmmm..... I guess my joke missed it's target.  Putting a link/pointer somewhere is not the same as actually providing what you are pointing at.  As of this edit there is nothing in the about link that explains FastBlogIt.com .  Right now you have a place & a link to it. I am eagerly awaiting the content

It is different than the faq button because:
  • it is under control of a secure group ... ie group about, whereas the is under control of the tag room faq, fastblogit.  Anybody can shove something on top of that stream.  That is not a good perdicament for us to be in when we want to carefully control what a person reads.
  • also the faq is a blog stream which shows the most recent items.  But we want to show the most recent edited pages.  Of course i am assuming that  those who are editing the page are aware of how to keep the items that are visable in a desired order.

I really do not know what you mean here.  The only place that i can think of that would satisfy that is http://fastblogit.com/ .   Personally i still want that to be the river.   People are used to seeing one click to get the "about this domain" page.  I dont see your complaint here.

well, you know the password, if not, then hail me.  I have seen some very good pr text come out of your group.  why not take a stab at it yourself ?

I may do that - didn't want to presume or usurp the 's prerogatives in that area without an invitation.
