well d'A would have to be paid ... and i don't have that kind of money. and, of course, it is quite a bet that it would end up just sustaining itself from ad revenue ... my bet is that it would take quite a bit more energy to be put into it, than it would get to sustain itself.
it looks, without a whole lot of reasearch, that Google would be even more expensive that what we have now.
i think the trick would be to find a cheeper host that is still reliable into the future ... perhaps even to share that with another enterprise that has the same requirements and desire for sustainability. me thinks we need to keep looking for that. then too is this going to be just me supporting this ... or are you going to help too?

How about paid adverts. Maybe the wizzards of d'A could redesign it so that it was more like play.
We once had an advert header.

Social Security does not yield any leftovers for investing at all. I would at least request that if you drop it provide me the keys so that I may make my own backup for all of it including the ming translator database etc. I am actively thinking about solutions but have none practical yet.
Maybe there is one (also requiring keys) in this somewhere or somehow.

We pay ~$90/month now which includes speaktomecatalog, your domains, and wics.cc. Pricing for Google cloud is here. I'm not sure, without a lot of reasearch, whether this would even be cheaper now or not.

How does the cost compare to what you pay now? It doesn't look free.

well we are on social security too and don't have any money to invest in this now. that was why i am thinking of reducing the cost. if the expense can be gotten down to $10/month ... and you lift half of the load, then that is just $5/month or $60/year ... and, at least for me, that is very doable far into the future.

I can probably find $5 month - maybe eat beans for a day or two... (I'm on my third day today) but if it clears the air - sobeit.

anyway i'm not thinking of right now ... i'm thinking of a year or two or three or even 4 from now. so we have time to watch the market and find the right opportunity. prices for hosting continue to drop ... all kind of arrangements become possible. that a new host is not a fly by night and has the where-with-all to provide a reliability well into the future is not necessarily an easy thing to know. gearing up to make the transition is another thing that takes will and energy. timing is going to be King.
i'm also thinking that getting off of the Firefox only editor should almost be a necessity of the move.
just putting the database in backup storage is nothing short of just the thing dying ... that is exactly what i am trying to avoid.

Putting it all in storage if DVD or ? is a good idea so that it doesn't get lost. I'm thinking of a better interface & maybe a concordance or index of content that is better than the tag system to find things. Works even with ming & several corpuses .

well how did that work for storing CyberMind? This thing is a dynamic process ... freeze it, and it no longer is anything at all ... except bits. not something that i will be putting any time and energy into. notwithstanding, of course, that you can do anything you want with the data yourself ... any time you want.

yeah i know.
just saw King Lear ... everybody died in the end ... not the usual plot these days. still and all a living thing trumps a dead one.

even if Nathan had provided all of the other data, would it be any different now?
source: mark
It didn't work for CyberMind because Nathan ran off with & lost the source code. Although I paid in part for the stuff to do it with, I am wiser from the experience - NP.

yes the threaded dialogue at MediaWiki is better than it is here, but i can't find any tagging. the association of threads by tagging is of extreme importance when trying to create mind. few places have taken on that aspect, G+ does about as good of a job as any.
Of course this item is not about improving fastblogit ... unfortunately, sans some more energy flowing in it that is not provided by me, it is what it is and will survive or not. Of course there is the possibility that you or I will just start talking in some other forum ... which we trust has the prospect of surviving better than this one, yet provides the same functions. Let me know if you find one, as far as i can tell G+ is a definite possibility. Facebook is kind of an other thing ... far more social ... and far more all inclusive ... but it has not really developed functional tagging or reliable persistence. Betting of which, Facebook or G+, will survive longer is ... er ... very interesting.

Perhaps MediaWiki would be better suited as a platform for slow paced discussions.
I really like the setup, although perhaps not all the content, of the RationalWiki . Some day perhaps there will be something that includes all media in a rational organization.

If what the participants say is something someone wants to read, view, talk about then advertizing should support it, otherwise it won't. The Wikimedia including Wikipedia provide value & get compensated by soliciting contributions to keep it going.

My experience is that G+ isn't much of a conversational platform.
