Attitude towards otherness

The attitude we can adopt towards something of which we know not (or are not) falls somewhere in this spectrum ...

"The less i tie my being right or wrong, to somebody else's being right or wrong, the better things go ... or said differently, respecting their being, in it's own right, is the most honest thing i can do." -- Bozo Faust
I came across this thought from struggles with RWG and its spectrum from the GR, (see 18874).  I see it now as a guide to move twards the end of the spctrum associated with respect for others.

Now why do you keep tagging this or something else ?
  • Because you seemed to be creating a two dimensional spectrum.
  • You used your own Ethos to summon attitude as a participant.
  • I think there are more dimensions - possibly as many as there are other humans.
  • To me the word otherness which is also in Wikipedia is a goofy word.

Alterity (Wikipedia) can have any charge +/- or something else.
It may even be trianglular - good/evil/love

wow, thanks for the new word.  "Alerity" does seem to name the same as my "otherness".

It is interesting that it seems that alerity started being used in our culture about the same time, early 70's, that i discovered it
I discovered the importance of the attitude when i was trying to re-adapt to sanity after being quite insane.

Note also that my presentation above is triangular.

Then Too who are the attitude police these days? Who appointed or elected them?  Are they the same people who write the laws for political correctness?

I do not understand the real concern here.  There is no designated "who" in this matter, nor should there be.  There are not attitude police.  Yet us being aware of our attitudes is very very useful.  Talking about them does exactly that ... it makes us more aware of them.

Cute attitude policeman, though .

There is no law for political correctness either, but the M$M, ME$M etc make it up as they go along anyway & politicians act as an arm of the attitude police!

... yep, so what?

You seem to me to be trying to degrade our ability to become aware of our attitudes.  Every time somebody mentions "attitude", you trout out this "attitude police" as if it negated their point.  It does not.  Attitude is important.  Being aware of your attitude is important.  Being oblivious to it is just being unconscious.
Yeah, the attitude police can find the chip on my shoulder but not on theirs.  Too bad.
Until you have mastered a zen perspective - Ekagrata in your own domain, let alone those in the alterity of else, I say so what about [this: item 17372].

  • well there are three stops along these variations as i indicated above.  if that is to be called a "two dimensional spectrum", then so be it.  It might be interesting to study whether the variations that exist when going from destruction direct to respect are the same ones that exist when going through carelessness.  If these are actually distinct differences in those variations, well then we do have a two dimensional thingey rather than a one dimensional one.  Thanks for noticing.
  • i guess "ethos" means the same as just judgement in yours above.  Now any person who judges anything is always a participant in that judgement ... although sometimes they do try to abstract themselves and be objective in the matter.  Unfortunately you have not specified what judgement i am making ... so i have no idea what you seem to be accusing me of.
  • "" ... maybe try not laughing and mocking about it and you might see some value ... er ... or not .  Maybe i should add "mocking" to the words on the left ... but that is already being represented by the word "decompose" which is what mocking tries to do to an idea.
  • if you prefer 'alterity' to my otherness, then by all means just substitute the one for the other.  i may try to do that translation for you by using 'alterity' more often when i mean 'otherness'

Check the spelling!
... yep, it's spelled "alterity" rather than "alerity".   I'll have to try to remember that.

It is interesting to note that the correct spelling has the stem "alt" with certainly must come from "alternate".  Otherness is about alternate things than the ones that we know.   Good word, i am glad you found it.  There for a while i was almost thinking that this was just me ... but now i know there is already a literature about this ... but, in a way, that this is already out there since the 70s does not surprise me ... if you think about it, it is a pretty straight forward and obvious observation.

  • There are many steps along the color spectrum but it is still linear.
  • Ethos is just your authority to speak - that which gives weight to your words regardless of their logic or emotion - maybe some day read some of that PDF on Ethos, Logos & Pathos I keep point at.
  • Not laughing is just you & your attitude flicking the chip on my shoulder & my attitude about attitude - similar to the motes in the eyes of those staring at each other & the you first phenomena of the Golden Rule  I associated many time to it.

but apparently you moved to the center of the dial, "oblivious, ignore, careless".   so fine , nice feature that Google might be partially implementing in 18884.

since you don't know what it is it can be any spectrum of attitude not just the one you adopt here

Well we know exactly to which attitude we are referring,  it is one' attitude towards others.  For example that attitude could be hostile ... or alternatively it could be curious.

We don't know the exact nature of the other because we are not it ... that is kind of the point here.
Obviously your attitude toward ideas which are otherness to you is to argue with them - you missed that.

.... yep, you are funny too.    Which end of the spectrum did we start playing in here?
other - missed your point - moving on to ignoring ...Zz..

There is no "other" end of the spectrum ... the whole spectrum is one's attitude towards other.
