a quote by werner erhard on filter, filters, perception, understanding, true, and truth | the gaiam blog

source: Werner Erhard
Man keeps looking for a truth that fits his reality. Given our reality, the truth doesn't fit. If you experience it, it's the truth. The same thing believed is a lie. In life, understanding is the booby prize.

Let me see if i can represent that same thought in my mind ... unambiguously ... with sentences that match my experience.

source: Seth - i [square bracketed] where i had to go beyond Werner's literal thought.

Man keeps looking for representations that fit his experience.  [I can call those representations his "reality".]  [But] given that reality [representations] what actually is does not [always] fit.  Assume that if you experience it, then it actually is.  Yet if you assume your representations are what actually is so, then you may well be mistaken.  In life, assuming that representations trump experience, is truly the booby prize.

[or in other words, understanding something is just representing it, and is not the thing itself ... assuming otherwise is foolish.]
... so yes his thought works over here.

I think, however, care needs to be taken not to imply from Werner's thought not to attempt to understand things.  In other words this is not a reason not to ask why.

I think I lost sight of the point here - it's just about another bun. I mistook it as an opportunity to argue a point.

[irrelevant stuff about me ignored]
Werner's quote is not for literal consumption without his context surrounding it.  His domain is ontology but a World brought forth as a conversation - not from the past - but languaged into being from a desirable future via one's declarations & integrity of one's being with one's declarations. In such a World, understanding is just stirring up the pot such as blaming childhood for one's current predicament.  (or the weather or government or ....?) No transformation is likely in this latter scenario.
[irrelivant stuff about you ignored]

Well there are lots of ways to live a life ... and many of them involve understanding.  But I can see how a way of living that  Karata Chops the WORLD (sorry my characterization of your short description) for what is desireable would not need any understanding and such would just get in the way.  But in any case, i do not think understanding and transformation conflict with each other ... rather me thinks in many situations they support each other.

Obviously judging (blaming) and understanding should not be mungbuged together.

Incidentally i think, integrity carried to an extreme can also "keep looking for a truth that fits represented reality".   We should probably examine integrity.   This stuff has a way of getting complicated and confusing.
... still ignorant of the context & continuing onward - make it up dude & enjoy the view from the garden.

Because Seth does not understand or is not used to Werner's manner of speaking or point of view & can't fathom or reconcile it within his own walled garden he has to bifurcate the quote in 17419 into his own group domain.(for personal control? for censoring my other comments?, who knows?).
L.O.L !

well i can see wisdom in recognizing patterns ... like for example the futility of responding to mark talking about me instead of some topic at hand.
yet i am gladly oblivious to why he does .
