we dont need no stinking domain names

hashtags point to contexts ... and ... er ... quite independent, i observe, of the particular servers involved. That, imho, is why they are so useful. I kind of proposed that myself here in 2005 ... note the title of the item. In other words these hashtags are the server independent URL to contexts. That is why i love them and think they are one of the most important things to start happening on the internet since sliced bread. and also why i abhor people corrupting them.

i said all just so you would know my attitude towards them.

Now i can read your description "The hashtag persists far outside of the original article & is used by everyone on the Internet & is shorter to remember than the title" to suggest just about the same thing i expressed above. Me thinks, going beyond that a bit, that hastags are the start of actual natural language words being formed and used on the internet linking up human language with the artificial mechinisms of the Internet. In other words "we don't need no stinking domain names" in our URLs. #dontneeddomainnames

BTW there is nothing special about a tag. In the days of programming for a bank it was just another sort field (data field) to find records of a specific type. Nothing special at all!

Well both words and tags are marks associatted with things by people to bring the things in a context to focus in a mind. if it walks like a duck and talks like a duck, i call it a duck. What is strange is citing some ancient scripture written by a person, really unknown, in a context, really unknown, to dispute my call ... now here is your mirth back at you

just assume that the # preceeds the tag. just like your browser's address bar will assume that whatever you type in is preceeded by a "http". another variation in tag naming here is that i allow spaces in them, twitter does not.

wow, maybe the W3C might usefully write a document standardizing tag naming protocol ... which characters are permitted, maximum length, etc. if we could navigate contexts with these context names transparently to the domains and enterprises that create the internet, we would be getting closer to a real mind growing here. no?
