interesting.  Are you saying that the one on the right is a specific variety that is sweeter?  I had thought the the ones on the right were just any variety of naturally grown carrots.  I arrived at that because most of the carrots i have seen in farmers markets and from our fields look like those more than they look like the ones on the left.   Fairly certainly the ones on the left were grown in a large field form controlled seeds ... probably GMO. 

More specific knowledge is required here .

My confusion here is about how to recognize varieties of carrots ... factoring out their natural irregularities.  Carrots in a grocery store usually look all alike with the only thing varying being their size.   Carrots from the farmer's market or a CSA usually have the stalks still attached, and are smaller, and have more irregularities.   What i don't know is how to identify the less sweet ones to which you refer ... but perhaps all i need do is to google varieties of carrots.
