how not to identify stinging nettle

About: nettle tea - how to make a natural spring tonic

First we need to get some nettle.  OMG, we found some growing in my plot.

Video of me harvesting nettle from my plot.

Video of me seeing if it stung.  I wouldn't call it a sting, more like a slight irritating itch for maybe all of a half hour, and then some slight allergic bumping.

Also seen in plot were bumble bees sucking on the squash stems ...

zoom image of leaf ... is it really stinging nettle ?

this may be a better picture of the shape of these leaves - 3 leaves in each cluster, with each leaf having 3 pointy sections with 3 or more points each

So finding some real stinging nettle:

Zoom

So Lara grew some stinging nettle in her plot.  And Mort showd me how to sting myself with it ... tiny spears on the underside of the leafs.   I can still kind of feel the place on my arm ... not painful ... just a mark there on my psyche.  It is a sign but not worded .... it  represents that moment and connotes a specific knowledge ... er with a sensation remembered on the skin of my arm ... privately ... you cannot see it or feel it.  I can talk about that mark but not use it to communicate with others ... just because it is private.

Strange what appears in the videos does not look like the nettle in your about link.  That could be a clue why it doesn't sting.  Did someone who knows identify it as stinging nettle - could you post a close up of some leaves much like this picture from Wikipedia?

Yes, Elizabeth of Healthy Horizons Family farm identified them along with the genius of the Amaranthus.  Apparently there is quite a knack to identifying plants ... perhaps i will get into it a bit.   The plot started with just grass land which was plowed ... then i carefully weeded it.  Now all of this diverse plant life has just started flourishing there ... probably dozens of species.  I suppose a normal gardener would just pull the stuff up ... but that sounds like too much busy work for me ... i'd rather watch it with amazement.

The nettle tea was slightly bitter and left a tingly reaction on my tongue  and lips.  Outside of that i didn't notice any effect.  I'll probably dirnk the other quart with some honey when i get around to it.

My front yard is mostly paved & a parking lot but the blackberries grow well along side & there are trees.  My back yard is a rather steep hill where my dogs do their emergency blogging when I haven't walked them. I just scrape the turds into a pit at the bottom. That's why I call it turd hill. It is about 3-level.  Some rainy seasons it gets a lot of water from the property above it - not ideal for farming .  There is a flat area mid hill , maybe 10 x 20 feet that I have my eye on - gets lots of sun - when I get the energy I will try to farm it.  No local water have to run a hose from the from of the house ~ 50 ' etc. will take a picture some day. Maybe shift my tomatoes up there .

There is a wealth or dirth of real info on the effects of supplements, teas, lotions & potions. I am trying to develop an inner sense of whether it is doing any good. I claim fairly decent health without supplements & teas.  I do like a couple of cups of coffee or green tea each day & walk the dog almost daily. I don't remember the last time I got the flu.  I am mostly vegetarian except for meals outside my home. A smoothie of vegetables & fruits seems to balance out unbalanced food. Sunshine gave us some purslain the other day - it is supposedly full of good stuff & is an herb which farmers consider is a weed - she found it in her garden plot.  I am going to train it in our turd hill & environs & see if it will push out some of the other inedibles.  Good in smoothies.

hmmm ... eating a succulent did not occur to me yet ... though am not sure why not.   We use smoothies mostly to utilize over ripe fruit ... works great.  Yesterday i made a smoothie of bannanas and grapes which otherwise people were sticking their nose up at.  It was a big hit ... maybe the best yet.

You have a turd hill?   do tell me about that

I was trying to tease out a better picture. Yours are NG for identifying whatever it was except a local fly type bug.

yep, next time i'm out at the plot i'll get some more detailed pictures.

Well I googled for images of stinging nettle & got a whole couple of pages that look like the Wikipedia one & I also googled stinging nettle look alikes & got a different set etc. I couldn't find anything like yours, though. Be careful eating weeds.

Yours looks closer to flat leaf parsley.
Here is a whole bunch of different species of nettle, none of which look like yours.

well yes the evidence is mounting that this is not nettle.  recognizing these plant thingies is a whole new world over here ... thanks for contributing .
