Metathinking

About: metathinking | psychology today

Yep, it is a real word.  IMHO it is just the state ambiguously placed between thinking & NOT thinking.  Such is the duality merry-go-round. That's one loop I never got stuck in "What are you not thinking about right NOW?" Practical metathinking seems to be thinking about something rather than becoming conscious of what actually exists.

Also goes along with metacognition.
I aways thought the prefix meta meant in the middle but according to etymology online it is after or behind as in afterthought. My bad I confused it with the roots of mezzanine.

i have always used the stem "meta-" to mean about.  As described here ...

In epistemology, the prefix meta- is used to mean about. For example, metadata are data about data
... in other words it is not the thing, but rather is just about the thing.  The metaworld is not the world, but rather is about the world ... er, but part of it is also about itself ... therefore we get metathinking or thinking about thinking.  Self awareness is, in and of itself, awareness about awareness.  It is metathinking in the metaworld.
Yeah - it is before or after the real thingy.

well it's for me too .  i love direct experience too .... i even love my experiences about those experiences.  sans the latter, the former would be not knowing.
I suppose that is your limiting belief. Must not have had an AHA! experience.

yeah i suppose i could experience and not know i was experiencing, yet somehow be able to talk about it afterwards.  Not sure what use we could make of such experiences together.   but, hey, tell me about your AHA experience ... it sounds quite fun.
For one thing one DOES KNOW that one has it as one HAS it.  I had to take a course in scientific writing at UCLA as part of the scientific corriculum.  The final paper I chose to write on the Aha! phenomena, but I was late turning it in. It was hard to put in words. You know it when you have one. It has a similar certainty to the answer to the question as "Who am I?".  The pile of words that accompany/describe such phenomena is always insufficient to trigger one, imho. Try transmitting an orgasm by a pile of words.

well i guess yes ... like for example rationalization comes after an event and rationalization is metathinking.

but to me time is not the important part of the relationship.  The relationship is just purely named "about".  I wish i could break that down into component relationships, but to me it is elemental.  It follows directly from signs themselves.

yeah - been there, done that! I prefer close encounters with the direct experience .. not for everyone, though .... & your results may vary.
