Where is the strongest anchor ...

... in me or in the world ?

Which begs the question ... is the following meme true ?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyway i think i am tending to believe that i must anchor myself in what i actually do in the world.

from within what ? bad pointer
huh ?

I really don't know what something you are presuming is withing what other context.  Or what bad pointer you refer to.

If it is the pointer to the meme in Facebook, well there is no more information there than in the graphic i quoted above ... Kat Johnosn (Nathan's daughter) just repeated the meme.

So apparently y'all can read the meme: "The world can only change from within." and  never asked within what?  What did you supply to complete the thought?
  • within me?
  • within the world?
  • my changing myself?
  • whatever Eckhart Tolle meant - he's so profound I feel enlightened already by reading it. Ah..........

I thought that was obvious ... within me ... or you if the subject is you, etc.   You see i assume a predicament in which there is a private space within my being and there is an outside of it in the public world.  I've talked of this a whole lot, see tag room insides... and in particular Insides and Outsides.   I presume that is the same inside/outside that Eckhart Tolle was refering to with his preposition "within".

Eckert Tolle is a person who made a religion out of NOW.  With NOW there is no change.

yep, , not my religion.
Then your meme is bizarre cognitive dissonance.

oh ... how so?

It may well seem bizarre when hitting your view ... as unfamiliar things frequently are .. and you may well feel some dissonance as a result ... but i assure you that dissonance does not get felt over here ... rather it feels more like grasping hold.   So the more actual information you can express to me about your feeling called "cognitive dissonance" the more i will understand your view.

Too much meta-pellick for me. Zzzz...

Understandable ... deep shit even for me

Thing is we have these new aged memes being propagated which glorify one's ego

Me i like to propagate ... and, er, do ... memes which glorify otherness

Perhaps there is a magical balance to be struck

Yep, I don't have your limiting assumptions, presumptions or anything else - anything can show up.

Oh really ... just what assumption am i making that you don't?   What does your assertion that "anything can show up" have to do with Eckhart's meme?

Now i can see some truth in Eckhart's meme after all.  The world is vast, and does not easily yield to me forcing changes on it (lol) ... so any grand change which does "show up" to me, will  probably stem from a personal revision of my own conceptions and attitudes.   I'm going to bet that is what Eckhart meant.

But that said, things do change in the world without some corresponding change in myself.  Some grand, some not so very.  For example I made no change in myself to cause all those people in the mall tethered to cell phones held hot in their hands to show up.  But a number of people and enterprises did collaborate to make that change happen.  So did those people and enterprises who changed the world, change it from within themselves?  I think not.

Anyway i anchor in the world to change my experience and habits  ... not the other way around.  I've just have found that works better for me ... the world being much more consequential than my insides.  That's just me, Mark ... and i don't want your judgement on it.  I would however totally appreciate any personal experience you have yourself in that context.

Maybe the magical balance is neither!

i am totally curious ... why do you speculate that there is not a balance to be struck here?

Start out with the actual wording in the meme & continue through what I have already written.
(ps. you will find no contradictions to argue with if you can delete my comments entirely)  or the whole thing.

... sorry mark i have already followed that and everything you have said here, and i cannot for the life of me understand why you think there is not a balance between inside and outside ... between ego and otherness ... between self and humanity writ large.   Why don't you just express that yourself in your own words?

There is no balance .  That which is inside is much, much smaller (less)  than what is outside even ignoring dualism etc. That which is inside will die when you go out the asshole of death.  That which is outside you most likely continues.  The problem of death separates two worlds from each other without more consciousness in both domains.

yeah i pretty much agree, except of course, for your beginning assertion.

you seem to be talking about some balance between different worlds themselves ... and were that the balance i was talking about ... i would agree and gladly assent to the notion that the worlds themselves are not balanced against each other.

But that is not what i am talking about.  I am talking about how a person, as they think, feel and act, balances the demands (or concerns) of their self versus the demands of the world.  I think that when that balance is squed, one way or the other, we get some sort of behavior that can only be descibed in a spectrum from dysfunctional to neurotic, psychotic, pathological, criminal, or downright evil. Most of these unbalances can be observed from the outside, especially if they are  extreme ... these are not just some imaginary syndromes,  and i expect they are found described in minute detail in the DSM.  While other syndromes are just felt as cognitive dissonance, or psychological pain on the inside ... causing an unhappy life and in the extreme suicide.

Now obviously I am not suggesting that these configurations be judged or controlled by anyone except perhaps the persons involved themselves.   Please don't go there, because that is absolutely not where i am coming from.  Nor am i saying that all mental illness is caused by this peculiar balance ... our human situations are far more sophisticated than to be modeled by just one duality.

Yeah, there is already too much written on [google individual society] (~ 66 million) and the Society portal in Wikipedia covers a lot in one place.  I'm not much interested in the subject as you seem to define it for this item. About the only touchstone that interests me here is [tags threefoldness]

Yeah, big topic, something that effects everyone, and something that everyone effects.

No surprise that those who become aware of the consequences of their actions focus upon it.

Otoh, I don't think there is any real distinction here.

hmmm ... you did originally, because you instantly responded that the strongest anchor was your self, and i responded the world.  That is quite a stark distinction from my perspective.
I answered a question. Within the rest, there is a pile of words like there is a pile of impressions from the senses in real life.  Making a distinction is something more than increasing the pile of words or adding more sense impressions to mix.  Anyway the meme, which was vague in the beginning has now become an anything feel-good greeting card smiley thingy & I still don't think it has meaning. Some will, however go away after reading it and think it does, at least the one they have made for it & they will have that AHA!  I guess it is like art which is mostly in the eye of the beholder. Words however are wasted on Art (except maybe poetry).

& a lot of it is just what makes some people sociology professors who think they are smart & want to try to structure others lives - sometimes because they have none of their own.

well yeah there are always a lot of people who study about a thing,  then there are others who actually do it ... the former not depleting the latter.
& yet the former & latter usually are found munged together in vivo.
I will net it out for you ... sociology is boring to me. Usually those who majored in it college that I heard about had no idea of anything to major in.  Others of the same ilk took up anthropology or education.

yep things in the world get blended together.  i didn't take up sociology either in school ... the way they study it seems wrong now ... and just boring then.  anthropology was kind of interesting to me even then, now i almost wish i knew more about it ... the same about education.   but then we kind of digress here ... this is not about the academic study of society.

i know what i am doing here in this item.  it is a continuation of this, so it is becoming aware of my peculiar solution to how my soul swims in the world.  i said "peculiar" because i don't believe everybody can or would want to use it.  when, as, and if i can discover my coveted knack or solution, i might not even publish it, primarily because i may not want to imply that it pertains to anyone else.  What i want to do, however, is express it with what i do in my life publicly so that it's flying butterfly wings can have their way in the waves of humanity at large.

SURVIVAL & LIFE

... when you anchor in LIFE, are you not anchoring in THE WORLD?  When you anchor in SURVIVAL are you not anchoring in FEAR?
IDK ask the guy that wrote this on survival.  Life has at least two or more contexts or meanings.
  • life as in a living organism
  • life as in my life - the course of a person's existence while between birth & death
  • life as a general category of being distinguished from the mineral kingdom.
  • what impels evolution as Darwinian survival - to reproduce oneself - reproduction

the bolded thingy makes no sense to me.

Well, read my two sentences, part of which you bolded, as questions to provoke thought and awareness, then perhaps they might make more sense.
  • anchoring in logic is not a good idea, because logic only works when one knows exactly what a thing is and it's relationships to other things ... yet the human mind is rarely precise enough about those identities to use logic.  the logic itself works well enough, the binding of the logical objects to experience is way too tentative ... when mistakes are made they can be fatal ... not good for survival.  see identity entails the laws of logic. CFR said substantially the same thing in Barbara Cubed, that's where i originally got it  ... he just said it from a perspective of people should be logical, rather than from the awareness that they cannot.
  • true there are many senses of the word "life"  ... er, a good example of why logic does not always work, especially with natural language which is what our minds think within.
  • a living organism's life cannot be fully apprehended by examining only the facts about the organism itself, but must take into account the environment in which it lives.  an analogy for that would be to comprehend a nail with no knowledge of a hammer.
  • the sense of life in my question was the second one you mentioned, "life as in my life - the course of a person's existence while between birth & death" ... or in other words your personal life, the life of your soul.  my thesis is that anchoring in that is like comprehending a nail with no knowledge of a hammer.
  • no comment pertinant to this train
  • i can view the evolution of my mind/soul and also the evolution of my environment ... things have changed dramatically in both since i started.  this seems more like an explosion than a choreographed dance ... i don't think most people realize that because each day is much the same as the previous.

so that is just the train you provoked in my thoughts.   i am curious how it effects yours.
