Copying Contexts

...

source: John McCarthy "A LOGICAL AI APPROACH TO CONTEXT" 1996

The first main idea is to make contexts first class objects in the logic and use the formula ist(c p) to assert that the proposition p is true in the context c. A second idea is to formalize how propositions true in one context transform when they are moved to different but related contexts. An ability to transcend the outermost context is needed to give computer programs the ability to reason about the totality of all they have thought about so far.

... & now munging contexts : [munging: item 17817] & 17865
Context & distinction is what makes something a something. Classification may help one navigate up or down a classification tree to abbreviate the search or specification of something, but that is for the convience of the person doing it & doesn't change what something is.

well, you may not have noticed, but 17817 starts off dealing with what you refer to as "what somethig is" because it asks "What consequences can actually be moved (copied) from one event to another event?"  ... "consequences" here standing for "what actual is".  In that case we are not talking about metaworld mental representations at all, but rather what is so even independant of mental observation.  An example is in order ... how about a recipe.  I learn to make gumbo through a process of events ... then i copy those consequences into another making of a gumbo ... therefore i copied consequences from one event to another.

Whereas 17865 is about how McCarthy is trying to copy context from one logical representation to another and preserve the same truth it had in the original context into the destination context.  It is exclusively mental ... of mind and representation.   It worked out, if you follow that whole AI development that it was quite difficult to do indeed.  They tried it with CyC ... i don't see as being a very successful project, do you?  But incidentally they used pure logic.

i had originally studied McCarthy's context in a paper he wrote titeled "Dimensions of Context" which i cannot find now for some strange reason ... it was not directly linked off of my ai jump page ... but McCarthys old home page is

found it ... it was not by McCarthy ... it was by Doug Lenet ... The Dimensions of Context Space by Doug Lenat 1998 ... a publication of CyCORP.

Picture two separate and entirely different networks.

Now picture the problems of isolating just one small section of one network and trying to find a way to fit it into the other network.

not an easy task at all ...

this one diagram tells quite a bit of the story ...

bear in mind that this whole treatment here is done with just logical machines.

but, we humans, we do not use logical machines to absorb some context

think ... how do we do it ?

well who cares really how it is done ... fact is that we do it ... er, or not in some cases

You & I are talking about different contexts.  I have the context of context in the Zen ontology, you are talking about it in the Cyc, AI, sticky molecule , Web 2 , semantic web ontology. Mine is about that which is both in the world outside computers, but acknowledges computers etc & everything else that IS. Yours is mostly linguistic based for computers & AI problems.  Where they overlap is fine. but C is one of those factors infinite & unknown for which words are all skew-wise. (c.f. LL II.32) i.e. not in the context space of computer linguistics.

Yes certainly i agree , we are talking about different usages of the word "contexts".

But then "context" is just a string of letters.  So both conceptions exist and work as applied in their appropriate setting.

I  use the word to mean a collection of related things ... usually statements in some language ... but not necessarily only linguistic statements.  I do believe, that usage is what a linguistic would be referring to when they use that word.

That conception is not just useful in AI and web and sticky molecules ... it is useful in psychology and culture and all manners of human communication.

Yeah part C is both the munge & the notion that one can model the human after the electronic network linguistic world & I prefer to examine that which IS and perhaps even destroy some distinctions & contexts to get there!

What is C and to what does the reference "LL II.32" point ??

have you noticed recently the info cropping up on the right side of the screen of a google search ? ... er, the semantic results.

This diagram might have a bit to do with that ...
