The Cathedral and the Bazaar - Commercial vs Open Source paradigms thoughtfully exposed.

Abstract

I anatomize a successful open-source project, fetchmail, that was run as a deliberate test of the surprising theories about software engineering suggested by the history of Linux. I discuss these theories in terms of two fundamentally different development styles, the ``cathedral'' model of most of the commercial world versus the ``bazaar'' model of the Linux world. I show that these models derive from opposing assumptions about the nature of the software-debugging task. I then make a sustained argument from the Linux experience for the proposition that ``Given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow'', suggest productive analogies with other self-correcting systems of selfish agents, and conclude with some exploration of the implications of this insight for the future of software.

There is a way to create music MP3 files from casette tapes & other analog music from a tape player (or maybe even the radio).  It requires an old version of MusicMatch jukebox and these instructions found on CNET website. MusicMatch may install some spyware - you will have to check that out.

Here is something on the building of houses to withstand Mother Nature  - Once I found a publication of Japanese houses with a single rigepole and circular effect that they said could withstand a typooon. Don't know where it is yet. This article is different. I also once found in Science Digest an article on quickly inflatable houses that were made from concrete impregnated rubber construction. The idea was to inflate them with water and they would harden into a nice shape for dwelling.  Wonder why some of this hasn't been tried yet in New Orleans

Well, thanks. I think I will take you up on the offer. I do own a copy of Iris 8.0 the OCR software. They are fairly decent in recognition.  They still can't recognize the ditto pages of the Yi King pages though. I was thinking of trying to scan the original characters in the Big Chinese dictionaries that Waw used to build Ming with. I Can't put them thru my flatbed scanner without them falling apart - they are half way there now.
