In opening the event today, Bill Gates said that every five years Microsoft looks at its strategy and makes big bets?1990 was Windows, the Web in 1995 and Web Services .Net in 2000. The next big bet, Gates said, is delivering a new type of software experience, called "live software."  It's about connecting users at the center, with relationships with people, data people care about, applications and all devices coming together to do things for you, Gates said. It's a way to think through the user experience, a fusion of software and services, with capabilities across the Internet, enabled by the broadband, wireless, low cost storage, a multitude of devices, the march of Moore's Law.  Sounds like a bit of Web 2.0 mixed with Microsoft's live naming theme?Live Meeting, XBox Live. Services = Software, in a broad way, from hosted services like email and CRM to MSN and mapping mash-ups.

This sounds like web services - the .NET shit. (J2EE in the open source world) I doubt that it is what you think it is. I've gone to a couple of their roll-out meetings like Office 2002 and Windows 2003 server & they all sound the same.

Mark de LA says
p2p might be interesting, but some say new customers for cable internet are leveling off - not a good sign for revving up p2p

Mark de LA says
See url http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/4399018.stm - looks more like web services.

source:  clippings from: Microsoft hails strategic shift
Software giant Microsoft has announced a major push into online software services, in what is seen as a move to counter rivals like Google and Yahoo.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates called it a "revolution" and the firm's biggest strategic shift in five years.

...

At the entry level there will be free online tools accompanied by advertising.

There will be a second tier of services that offers these online tools with extra features, but will cost a small subscription fee.

Power users, meanwhile, can buy a fully-featured premium service.

Whether you approve of yesterday's big announcements from Microsoft, or you don't, on a quantitative level they certainly narrowed what I call ?the conversation gap.?

I call this a good analysis

note his point is what happens on the right hand end of the graph on October 30.
