Advertising Industry (digital) in US worth about $62 billion. Global it is worth around $542 billion (1/2 trillion)   Hence the $-sign in M$M, eh? Such is fairly huge steroid for spreading memes.

A study of VALUE in relationship to advertizing yields some of the following:
  1. advertizing inflates value
  2. advertizing informs potential customers of both true & false info on products
  3. advertizing informs customers of new products & value changes in old products that customers may not know about
  4. some say word of mouth advertizing is the most credible - of course that was before twitter
  5. Since I learned of the VALS survey from Tony Robbins in the late '80s collecting data on customers & consumers has skyrocketed due to the Internet.
  6. Carried to extreme, some people detect who you are when you enter a store from your smart phone & tailor specials to your phone given what they know about you & your habits
  7. Given the social media such is exploding in the area of politics creating value & memes which contain little truth

Mark de LA says
  • advertizing adds to the cost of goods & services both for the consumer & the provider.
  • the same goes for the cost of governments.

There is a field of economics called Value Theory - see the Wikipedia.

A heads up for some: (others not so much)
There is a disturbing trend in advertizing to force the ads upon people or make them hard to bypass.  Maybe a perfect semantic search would do something to advertizing industry. OTOH advertizing creates needs & wants which don't pre-exist!
