Provenance by C.F. Russell

speaking of bibliomanic in the context of #provenance reminded me  i just now ran into an inscribed copy of  the book with that title by none other than CFR ... which i am taking as just a strange coincidence.  I wondering if i should scan it and put it in the cloud ... er, would that totally demolish its bibliomanic properties ?

...  hmmm in regard to Scott's term, "this copy found me" , some background here.

What do you hope to achieve by any of this?

I remember when he was typing out the manuscript. I also have a 2nd manuscript probably intending to be published at some other time.  He wrote it in the days of things like stamp, book, coin, postcard, matchbook, etc. collecting & book especially first editions were valuable & contributed to the purchase of Walgrove.

just mostly my love of the specific

& generally empty

well now that is ambiguous.

you could be saying my love of specific things generally does not exist, in which case you are guffawing about something of which you know nothing.  or you could be laughing about a judgement  that specific things generally do not exist, and rather generalities are to be loved ... a variation of Plato's cave ...

... or, you could have found a joke in another land entirely, your peculiar humor unfathomable to the likes of me ... a joke forever to be hidden from the universe and to decay with your bones.

incidentally, Mark, what is all this "empty" shit of yours?

The preface is the most readable part of the book. The rest looks like Abebooks with nicknames for the book dealer from which the items were purchased & coded book entries.  Most of the books have been resold & not in the archives.
lol

so you still have some of them in "the archives" ?

I have 3 mint copies of each of the 3 different colored bindings, 1 red, 1 black & one blue with the dust jackets & errata sheets.  Once sold for ~$200 each they are still collectable. I also have some residue of my personal ones.

oh i was asking about how many of the other books listed in Provenance still existed in "the archives" ? ... not copies of Provenance itself.

Incidentally this one is inscribed to Lotus, now i am wondering where my inscribed copy is, or whether it even existed ... a quick scan of my existing library here yielded an empty set.
Probably next to your ZZ inscribed copies.  I don't have it.

... er, notwithstanding this instructive

& yet some sold them anyways.  & some like you apparently want to publish it on the Internet. This is a spurious side track . Its purpose was as a catalog of GW's books for his business as a book dealer. Enjoy your musings.

are you so very sure of GW's purpose of publishing this book?  After reading the preface and seeing how the book was done, i have quite a different take on that.  And no i have no intention of publishing the entire book on the internet ... which would be a bit of a contradiction of its original purpose as i see it ... i just offer this tease for whatever it will provoke.

I have to admit I was monitoring that thread and was overjoyed. It looks so crisp! My intimacy with his other material is limited to rolling some "dice" over the years & just enough projective geometry to take it seriously, so this one by far my favorite. It's probably obvious to you guys but to me the ledger & the preface demonstrate each other . . . here's what he wanted & got . . . and imply a third factor in the form of the collector's desire that animates both theory & praxis. At the end, the game stops & the collector may leave a stack of dead wood behind or just a trail of transactions as one way to leave an imprint on time. The titles themselves don't have to matter to anyone but the collector except as "the lineaments of gratified desire," which itself can have a kind of magnetic power. At least it's worked for me as I chase titles that for all practical purposes don't exist. I'm sure there's a Book G-W out there to go with this B-W, for example. One day it will turn up. In the meantime, I think I've turned down about four copies of #provenance so far. They MOVE!

Is it like a sequel or an entirely different subject?

Might it ever find some kind of context persistent from the carelessness of mold, the garage sale, and a subsequent bonfire?

There is an early libri of the Tai Shu called G_W.   Scott Martin seems to be as obscure as Bozo as far as I can tell.  I still don't appreciate your fascination with Provenance yet especially since it seems to be cloaked with the above mess of thought.

Empty is like nothing except less null;  empty implies full of something at sometime. Provenance was empty mostly of  the point of Provenance.

peculiar,  i found Provenance quite full of the point of Provenance.   i guess being empty is kind of another relative thingy ... beauty in the eyes of a observer as it were.

There is something that i could honestly say about Provenance  ... but will not ... there being no intention here to utter such provocations about it.
maybe so - I tagged the thingy named Provenance which was empty.

I basically told you above very few - maybe none.  I don't feel inclined to do the research.

understandable ... and not a  problem .  any presumption that a love of any specific things carries from generation to generation or even from peer to peer would be fundamentally flawed.  loads could be said about that subject ... especially in the context of the exploding expansion of specificity and this grand differentiation that is on going always ... and then too there is this cusp between 4 space and the virtual digital dimension which we are encountering.  exciting events to live through ... no?

Some day I will try to establish a reading library physical or digital of GW's written works & projective geometry.  This is a logo T & I worked on & sometimes accompany books with it when we send out some requested from Breck's website like BC1.  BTW, I hold the Golden Ass in a different way than you folks do.

I think it was labeled as Provenance continuation & looked like more of the same.  Archives are in storage not instantly easy to peruse.  The mold did not affect this item.  Mold mostly disappeared when we left Walgrove. The archive is reasonably safe as anything is in this world.

... a great intention indeed ... and one that i share.

It's interesting to note that in today's world a physical location for such a collection is not only more expensive  but also severely limits the scope of its shared consequences.  I mean, even The Getty library with all of their wealth has noticed that.

For my part i offer a public directorie in the Google Cloud called simply "cfr".  Anyone can view in minute detail, but as it stands now only I can add to the collection.  If you choose i can add you to curate.

Incidentally i like your logo .

Beyond a certain volume there are charges, are there not? The volume is quite extensive for the Tai Shu. Others I still sell to pay for my storage costs all these years.

Well, yes of course, any kind of storage costs money.  I have used about 20% of the free portion granted to each user by Google with materials that have nothing to do with cfr ... so i have a long way to go before any cost there bites me personally in the ass.  You know far more than I about the scale of materials left by cfr ... viz: which can or should be digitized, and which can or should be sold to private collectors to pay for their cost of persisting in the world.   I have no problem deferring such decisions to your wisdom.

Inevitably the materials should be indexed and shared.  Perhaps something like TheBrain could be used.  Strangely enough i am hosting a project that was originally introduced to me as TheBrain on steroids.  Perhaps that may dovetail into a an excellent indexing tool that we can use here.

So, Mark, is that unpublished manuscript not just the second half of the alphabet, as Scott has suggested in this comment,  "I'm sure there's a Book G-W out there to go with this B-W, for example" ?

Answered.

What is this product that is TheBrain on steroids's name? Is it something you are creating or is it out in the Internet somewhere?

it is something that Nathan started developing, called floodle.me.  you would need to sign on with facebook.
