I'm not so very sure that is always the case and with everybody, but i think i have seen it happen to me innumerable times.

This also might have something to do with the fact that, once you recognize a virtue or a ability, then you seem doomed to defend it.  But if you never knew you had it,  you can keep doing it without any such disadvantage.

This one came from a recognition of instances where i made up a story about myself  ... assuming that said story requires me to have some specific virtue or ability ... then using that ability becomes almost impossible.  

One obvious and blaring example would be humility as a virtue. 

so yes, , depends heavily on the specific virtue involved. 

But does awareness of an ability ever really make that ability better?  Haven't been able to find an example of that, have you?

innocence or being in the state of the first card of the Tarot is perhaps another example.   making a virtue of innocence, destroys the innocence involved.
