These people who kill as many people as possible, are giving crazy people a bad reputation ... undeservedly, i must say.

The spectrum of crazy is wide & deep.

yes indeed.   therefore, it is difficult to establish reliable {if crazy, then do X} rules.
no duh!

well i am saying, it is difficult to write effective gun control laws, based upon mental health records.   i'm wondering if there are better behavioral indicators, for example: the mere possession of a gun not to be used for hunting or protection.  the problem with that is, it can not be bureaucratically determined from public records.

I just think: a hypersensitivity to public records of aberant mental behavior, are going to have some nasty unintended consequences that may even be worse than these mass killings.  Standardized behavior is not something that I want to see legislated or start having consequences in our society.

if it were just me, i would get rid of all the guns (period).  but then it is not just me .
Yep - the only purpose of a gun is to kill something living or target practice to do so. Same as for a bomb ( the Middle East likes them - no practice required) , bow/arrow etc.  The second amendment was a defensive measure against governments who use force against their citizens as was evidenced as needed in the Revolutionary War which allowed the founding of the country & the creating of a CONSTITUTIONAL government. The government already controls more guns & firepower than anyone else.

More people are killed in car accidents & drunk drivers than guns. One could probably find a correlation between stupidity & mass killings - let us outlaw stupidity.

just got an idea.  Put a very large tax on the manufacture of guns ... raise the price ... make owning a gun be a major investment.  Then enforcement moves to policing of gun manufactuers.  That should, over time, effectively get guns out of the hands of these crazy kids.

of course, it will never happen in America, given our current gun obsessions.  Oh well, too bad i  have this limitation on our society ... we must have gun crazies .... i have argued for it ... so therefore and because of that it must be.

Anyone notice that criminals don't obey any gun laws. Just like the war on drugs raised the price of pot & cocaine & heroin etc. - your solution will be a boon to the black-market & foreign manufacturers.

well certainly foreign and black market production will need to be thwarted with effective enforcement.   i'm thinking that there are always more consumers than producers and those producers are more visible and therefore can be more effectively controlled.

I am doing a bit of conceptual art here with this idea.  If we could actually solve this problem, what would be the most effective way, which would have the fewest unintended consequences?   This way, gun owners would have to take on a grater cost and responsibility for their cherished possessions.  Those who could not take on that responsibility could not easily get any guns.  As a society we would put our resources behind enforcing that gradient.

But, no, this is not a solution that we can reasonably expect to happen, given our current obsession with gun ownership.

Yep - obsession pro-against guns is perpetual.
Notice how easy it is to get illegal drugs into the country- laws & enforcement notwithstanding.  Notice how easy it is to get illegal people into the country - laws & enforcement notwithstanding.
Had armed guards been at the school the perp might have been shot quickly.

Hasn't worked to curb drugs - are you an idiot?
It just increases crime to pay for it.
