well there is no doubt in my mind that there is competition between self and society. to me it's like the Tao .. neither shall ever win. different people favor one over the other … and the same persons favor differently at different times and in different contexts.  some people hate society … i know … i grew up in a culture which totally favors self … society being relegated primarily to illusion. this ball bounces more strangely than i think most people realize.

The individual versus society is a tired old conversation not necessarily improving with age.
seems to me that you refer to the self same conversation ... "self vs society" is just another coding of "individual vs society". 

it seems that one way or another that balance is what my peculiar life is all about. 

and as as society is changing so fast, the conversation is always new.   In fact today's society is so different from that of when Gulliver's travels was penned ... there is almost no comparison.  We are in a explosion ... relationships change as thing expand dramatically.  Strangely enough the self, me thinks, may not have changed quite so dramatically .... but maybe not ... maybe our selves are more just a reflection of our society then most selfies care to admit.   Certainly something to think about.
