"Know thyself, the rest is irrelevant", seems to me to be one of the assumption of solipsism. It says one's insides are all that matter, what is outside of that, ... what is other than that, ... is unimportant. I am not judging ... perhaps that is great way to be ... it just is not my way ... it's like that would be a armadillo, but i am a bunny rabbit ... different animal.

I blued out the erroneous statement. Know thyself is one of the oldest & crispest mottoes of awareness & consciousness (& still is!) Master it & you won't go around worrying about what others think of you - good or bad. One could say it is enlightenment itself. Solipsism is wholly something else more like some Startrek episode or the ethersniff trip where at one point we thought that the Universe was just a record & someone could just pick the needle up off the record anytime .

Knowing yourself is great ... no questions about it. My problem is with "the rest is irrelevant". When "the rest" is what others think about me, i would tend to agree ... that usually is fairly well irrelevant.

But if I am a second hand of a watch, sweeping over numbers from 1 to 12, those numbers are not irrelevant to me ... my relationship to those numbers are why I exist.

anyway i think i hear what you are saying and it is good advise for some situations ... like for example what Joe Blow is thinking about what i am writing here. but for me the emphasis is just wrong ... the world of other than me, is where i want to live, it can not be irrelevant to me. that relationship is what my life is sculpturing. Unlike a mere second hand, being human means that we can sculpture our own relationship with the rest of the world.

You are not a watch face - neither are you the big hand nor the little hand. Being "in the World" ,as Erhard would say, perhaps, instead of just inside your head is awesome! But then again most swamis & yogis are not "in the world", but in their head or on facebook or trying to escape the world into Nirvana. (imho). It is fun to appreciate & exercise all parts of human being including - but not limited to - the physical, life, mental & Ego.

well personally i don't think it is all that contrived ... although perhaps the wording of it is. i have noticed it myself ... haven't you? other versions of it are "you can't love sombody else, untill you love yourself first" ... or, "the love you feel for another, is really the love you feel for yourself".

... what i am trying to get at here is the mirroring effect? ... just how prevalent is it? ... can it be eliminated? Me, i don't like it ... i think it is a perversion ... good side or bad side ... doesn't matter.

for example try becoming the person you see in the mirror in the AM. Then dress up in a Halloween costume of a clown or something & try again: seeing each in the others' eyes.
