a better term for "cognitive dissonance" may well be "self-absorption". 

"Self-absorption" is such an experssive word ... read it in the light of the absorption train of thought ... asque form the rwg train of though.

in any case there is a grand distinction between self-absorption and self-awareness.  Self-awareness does not lead to cognitive dissonance, but self-absorption does.

  Now i'm wondering ontologically ....
if self-absorbtion vs self-awareness is a spectrum, ...
how can people measure where on that spectrum they fall?

I'm thinking that the measurement must needs be a relative measurement.  Just as the velocity of a single body is meaningless ... so would the measurement of where in the spectrum between self-absorption on one end, and self awareness on the other, be quite meaningless of a single person.   But it might be possible for a third party C to measure and say A is more self-absorbed than B.
