About: shiftedit - online ide

This is our first mailer, so things may have changed a bit since the last time you used ShiftEdit, or you might hardly remember ShiftEdit at all!

As a reminder, ShiftEdit is the original Online IDE for developing websites. It's fast, sophisticated and runs on all computers including Chromebooks.

Over the years ShiftEdit has added powerful features including realtime collaboration, ssh terminal, local development, hosted enviroments and many other improvements.

Recently the UI has been completely rewritten from the ground up. It's lighter and more customisable. The source code has been placed on GitHub so that anybody can contribute improvements.

If you haven't used ShiftEdit for a while, now is the time to give it another try.

Happy coding, Adam Jimenez (author)

so do i need the $6/month account to be able to keep this project at shiftedit ?
nathan@fbi 2015-12-16 11:54:38 [item 19219#37667]
No. For free you can only work at one site at a time and you have reduced collaboration with other users. I normally have used the free account when it was just me and changed all the ftp settings when I needed to work at a different site. Mainly we are paying so we can work on the same files at the same time. I thought that would be really nice.
seth@fbi 2015-12-16 11:56:45 [item 19219#37669]
ok … but after this collaboration … is shiftedit just going to store my code and data backup for free, for ever?
Don’t know. I don’t use those features of shiftedit. I directly edit the code on the site. I’m not interested in them storing code for me.

so do i sign on there with the account you are using?
No. You would sign on with the account you created. Then enter the correct ftp info for your site and the correct place for the dev files and we would be collaborating.

ok that is a real fork …. … now how do we get it back together … just thinking ...
nathan@fbi 2015-12-16 12:05:21 [item 19219#37675]
Yes. I have been thinking about that too. Merging them is not a big deal with jQuery to do the heavy lifting of breaking apart and reassembling the html with just a few lines of code. But getting the right things to merge at the right time and when even more than just two people could be colliding at once is bigger than I have figured out yet without an atomized stream.
With an atomized stream, everything is always a single atom of operation and always in perfect sequence.

okay … it is actually prolly done better manually … especially here where we both have the same permissions … if a foreigner were in here forking we would be in a different predicament.

that said, the system infomed me nicely that i forked, so i know what is going on … you, however would not have known untill, i guess, you read your news … for examle i didnt know you just forked me again

… just thinking
Yep. That’s how I know. Both the news and the appearance of extra unhidden comments. It’s not terrable, at least not is lost. Its just messy.

re …
You'll have to create your shiftedit account because it requires an email response.
  1. Go to http://www.shiftedit.net
  2. Click [get started]
  3. Click [register] ... this is important. You must create an actual account, not just login with FB, or I will not be able to log in with FB or whatever and set things up for you. You can log in with FB etc. next time.
  4. Follow instructions and create your account.
  5. Log out then send me the login info you created and I will set things up so we are correctly synchronized in the right dev working folders.

done … info comming via chat

Yep. Not only that, but I have been finding bugs in their new work and submitting them and they have been great about fixing them pronto.

Apparently to do much with cindyJS I will need to do builds from github and maybe know about node & npm.  There is a build of cinderella which spits out cindyjs files which can be interfaced with the web. Unfortunately it is private on github somewhere. An interface which bypasses java example is one on my header link for group projective geometry .  Is shiftedit good for that? I am less interested in the HTML than the JS stuff.

Shiftedit is excellent for JS. Intellisense and autoformat and everything. It’s all I use now.

I will need a sandbox to play in unless they allow me to setup IIS on my own computer – I think I would have to pay for that, eh? I signed up for the freebie. Any suggestions?

I hadn’t thought of that. I might need the wizzard to help set it up. I have no access to the cpanels etc any longer. thumbs up
seth 2016-02-01 06:49:31 [item 19219#44105]
I believe your domain is under the “domains” account, and i can surely give you access to that.  Hail me on chat for it later today … im still in the bed now … got to go look it up in the office.  The url may have changed for the control panel since last time you used it … i can get you that too when i get out of this modal window.  Incidentally donations for the hosting would be greatly appreciated in the tip jar.
Mark 2016-02-01 07:45:55 [item 19219#44120]
Yep – still trying to see if I am on a wild goose chase. Most of the code for cindyJS is in sharing domains overseas.  I have no control panel access. Will communicate offline on that . The tip jar is obscure. (probably on purpose) – I trust paypal for most web transactions or cc to your other business.  thumbs up
well you can always send me money via paypal … send it to russell.seth@gmail.com … later i will put up a button for it here.   nathan’s tip jar is here … talk to him about that.   This thingey is evolving … and so is the way it will grow and be sustained.

going to see if i can use this wink
dA 2016-02-02 13:44:28 [item 19219#44269]
Sounds good. And coordinate with me if you intend to save any files. I have many files open and we could collide with changes.

Nathan’s famous patch scored again … i fixed this one with shiftedit smiley.   Now when something at speaktomecatalog doesn’t work, i just go find the file that is not working and apply the famous patch on top laugh
LOL … well I have slowly been weaning fastblogit off of it. It’s very unsafe.
It allows a hacker to inject any initial value they want for any variable in the whole system.
That’s why the feature was removed from the PHP language over 10 years ago.

At some point we must convert ALL mysql commands over the mysqli object syntax too. The mysql set of commands were depreciated some time ago and are already gone from the next up version of PHP. People getting the system will not take kindly to this system only being able to run on PHP 5.4 or earlier since modern PHP is already to 7.2. At the same time … or perhaps even better, convert everything to nodejs which is faster and cleaner and more flexible than PHP. PHP is over the hill as a language, on it’s way out.

Guck cheeky looks like i will have to upgrade.  I centainly have more than just one site.
dA 2016-02-02 15:35:14 [item 19219#44287]
Could be. I used the free edition for years and just switched site settings as needed. But I rarely needed to access more than one site at a time. It is nice to be able to access multiple sites at the same time in the same editor though. Makes sharing code a breeze.
seth 2016-02-02 15:38:38 [item 19219#44288]
how would i “switch site settings” as needed ? … can’t find any place to do that.
dA 2016-02-02 15:42:37 [item 19219#44289]
At the top right of the file and folder view is a settings hamburger. Under that is edit site. Just change the ftp info and test and then save.
seth 2016-02-02 15:44:51 [item 19219#44290]
oh so one would need to put in the credentials again for any different site just to long on to it?   and also loose all the revision history for the site being left?
dA 2016-02-02 15:47:41 [item 19219#44291]
I don’t think you loose revision history. I don’t know. I don’t use it in shiftedit. I use git for that. Yes, putting in credentials is no big deal. Takes 15 seconds. But you can upgrade too.
yes prolly will wink
