deciding how to allow guests to comment

the old system allowed this.   but not in a graceful manner.   i would like to get that feature back if possible, or at least fold it into phase 2

of course this is where we get spam … but occasionally we get pertinant comments … and we cannot expect that people will register for a group just to comment.

if we don’t allow guest comments, then the “add comment” on the item triler should not even be there … right now if you click it, it does nothing, if you are a guest.

This is the first guest comment. Was working on the guest commenter while you wrote that post apparently.

Quite a few sites allow guest comments actually. This one will be stable. :) And not rich text of course! And no html tags allowed of course. :) And fully javascript so it will filter out robots, of course!

Most blogs & comment opportunities require to somehow identify yourself before making a comment. What of value has come out of guest comments?

well quite a number of times i have gotten comments on a items that i had been talking about elsewhere on the web.   … also check out your article [title Interesting quote website] which was probably the most successful post at drawing pertinant anonymous comments just from being well indexed and topical.

Yep CSI watchers – no doubt. Where did they go afterwards? How many actually understood the quote & how many just wanted to argue their own take?

What does that mean .. it left behind an empty comment.  I am sure I made one somewhere.
Now that’s a pretty good feature! AI automatic censoring. Wish I had made it!

this is where i woud want to just tag this thread “read” … i don’t want to continue it … i don’t want to like it … i don’t want the last commenter to think i didnt read his brilliant opus.

Why don’t you stuff it in the back room – won’t that work?
No. Putting it in the back room by itself doesn’t let the other people know that it has been seen. Anyone could have put it in the back room. Seth is right, “mark read” is a nice feature. But it requires database work. It’s not a browser only supportable feature.
