What is a better word for item ?

rep … google rep … short for “representation”
tho … google tho …. the stem of “thought”
thought … google thought …but why abbreviate? “thought” is just 3 more keystrokes than “item”. People will instantly know what we are tlaking about. And thought 20000 just has a nice ring ←

It doesn’t have to be a newly coined word. It’s more about a feeling. It needs to feel fresh, happening, inviting, and grabable. It’s always good when it has any attributes that make it funny, mysterious, or curious too. It’s also a bonus if is a word that can be run through the talk show circuit, have skits made about it, and when it can easily become an action verb like “Google it” or “Facebook it”.

Even without choosing perm. Perm does have many of those attributes. One can say “perm it” and know they are referring to coming here to write about or meme it. The fact that perm is also a kinky hair style is humorous and opens it up to be played with, which is all just great advertising. Even the idea permutations applies here, so it’s got a built in duality which is nice.

Perm may not be it, but it would be excellent to find a word with as many hits on the list as perm has. That’s the kind of word we are looking for.

The difference is that the word “item” is commonly used for stuff all over the pages here. Like list items, and tag items, and the control bar items. The word thing (or thingy) is not commonly used for the items that are already here.

i like “rep” for “representation” … which is what these thingeys are … that distinguishes them from just any thingey … like for example that stuff in the bottom of the sink there … that is a thingey … but it does not necessarily represent anything. but our thingeys here represent … that is what they do … they are reps. Short and sweet … and maybe some day could be a top level domain.

well, mark, we are trying to make these things pop … become popular … pop out for people. You know, the way tweeting did … the way google became a verb …. so to use a bland word like “thing”, or “item” won’t do that for us … it is insuficient branding. “rep” has the advantage of being a word that we can brand stamp and have it mean to the public just our specific thingeys. i nominate “rep” to replace “item” … talk of them using that name for a while … see if it works for us … ok … ok?

I don’t think it matters so much, just so long as it is not ambiguous. If you have a good catchy name then it could become a trademark. But if not, people will call them what makes sense to them and what they are using it for. The most important thing is to not call it something ambiguous that also referes to many other things in the same environment. That’s why item is not working. When people see item they are going to go “huh? which item” … I still do that when seth writes item. There are so many items here all over the page.

But catchy would be good … good for business and advertising

Hanging your success on pop may flop if people don’t understand the name more intuitively . Maybe use a hashtag like #pos #stuff or maybe #d’A #bozon
